Make Beauty Products

Home beauty products are quickly becoming a favorite because they are less expensive, more effective and fit within the new "green" rules for the planet. But what products work best? That may vary a bit from person to person. However, you may just find the right answers for you. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use old coffee or tea grounds to rejuvenate dark hair from deep red to black. Mix about one-half cup of the grounds to one gallon of boiling water. Let steep for 30 minutes to one hour. Strain out the grounds. Let the liquid cool and store in an old soda, shampoo or conditioner bottle for the next time you wash your hair. When you are ready to use it, wash and condition your hair as usual and then rinse thoroughly with your coffee/tea mixture. Let it sit on the hair for at least three to five minutes before rinsing. The coffee/tea mixture will also help to remove any excess product in the hair as well as soften it and give it unbelievable shine.

2. Use mayonnaise as a hair conditioner. The popular condiment has vitamins that help to restore the oil to overly dry hair and will add sheen. Apply to freshly shampooed and work it through. Wrap the hair with a towel or turbie twist and let the natural conditioner sit for about 30 minutes. Rinse and style as usual. To add even more "oomph" to the mayo, mix in an additional egg for extra natural nutrients.

3. Make a herb scented oil for lackluster, dry hair. Mix herbs like mint, rosemary or lavender together with olive oil. Each herb has its own special restorative powers. Mint helps to cleanse the hair of excess product. Rosemary stimulate hair growth. Lavender adds body and shine. To make scented oil, place the herb of your choice in a bowl of olive oil (about one cup). Next, set the container in direct sunlight or anywhere else where it will be regularly exposed to a mild heat source. Cover the mixture with plastic wrap and let it sit for between 30 and 60 days. Strain the herbs from the oil and store the herb mixture in a recycled soda, shampoo or conditioner bottle until you are ready to use it. When you are ready to use the oil, heat the oil slightly in the microwave or but putting the bottle into extremely hot water. Let it get nice and warm before applying it to freshly shampooed hair. Work throughout your locks carefully. Wrap hair in a towel or turbie twist and wait for between 15 and 30 minutes before rinsing the mixture out of the hair.

4. Make a cucumber remedy to remove excess chlorine buildup in your your hair from all those trips to the pool. Mix one egg with one-quarter cup of olive oil. Next, take half of a cucumber and make it into a paste in your blender. Mix it together with the egg and olive oil. Apply the mixture directly to freshly shampooed hair and let sit for between 15 and 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

5. Use a beer rinse to put body, softness and shine back into your hair. The proteins of the beer's malt and hops will coat the hair shaft to help prevent the damage that happens naturally from daily styling. Apply the beer to the hair after shampooing. Work it throughout the hair thoroughly and rinse.

6. Use banana to restore life to dull, dry hair. This product, unlike those listed in the first five steps, sould be applied to hair before shampooing. Mash the banana into a paste and add just enough olive oil to make it easy to spread over the hair. Work the paste throughout hair and let sit for between 15 and 30 minutes. Then shampoo, condition or rinse as normal.

7. Use lemon juice as a natural summer hair lightener. Mix four parts of water to one part of lemon juice. Use the mixture as a rinse after shampooing for a more dramatic effect. For more natural looking highlights, put the mixture into a recyled spray bottle and spray on the hair wherever you want highlights. This way you can control as much or as little lightening effect as you like.

8. Make your own hair spray using lemon, lime, and/or orange and water. Mix one part of citrus to two parts of water. Mince the rind of the citrus for use as well since that is where many of the vitamins and nutrients are stored. Simmer everything in a microwave or over a burner until the mixture becomes reduced and somewhat thickened. Strain out the rind and pour the mixture into a recycled spray bottle for easy application.
