Horse manure creates quality compost.
Whether you own a single horse or a whole herd, the problem of what to do with manure exists. You can deal with this problem effectively while creating nutrient-rich soil for your garden by setting up a series of compost bins near your pasture or corral. Build two or three bins -- three bins allow you to place the manure in one bin, have an empty bin available and have a third bin to store the finished compost. Once the bins are in place, fill them with waste from your stalls and let the composting process do the rest. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Lay out the area for your compost bins, making sure it is as level as possible. Measure two feet from each end of the area for the first compost bin. Dig two holes, at least 2 to 3 feet deep, at those spots with a posthole digger.
2. Place the support posts in the holes at a depth of 2 to 3 feet. Backfill the holes with one-third of the dirt you removed.
3. Tamp down the dirt and continue to backfill. Make sure the supports are level. Continue adding dirt and tamping it down until the holes are full.
4. Put the first board on the ground, flush with the two support posts. This will form the back wall. Drill two holes through the board, lining each hole up with the posts.
5. Attach the board to the supports with lag screws. Add more boards above the first one, in the same manner, until the bin reaches the desired height.
6. Repeat the process of installing support posts and attaching boards on the other sides of the bin until it is the desired size. Build additional compost bins if you wish.
