Cooking Hamburgers On A George Foreman Grill

Hamburger

The classic summer lunch is grilled hamburger piled high with fresh tomato and onion right from the garden. However, you'll need good weather before grilling. With a George Foreman Grill, you do not need to depend on the weather. You can make that delicious burger in a few minutes indoors. Add this to my Recipe Box.

The Grill

The model of George Foreman grill you own affects the number of burgers you can cook at once, as well as the how you preheat the grill. Earlier models designed to cook for one or two people will hold three burgers comfortably, but do not have an indicator light to tell you when the grill is the right temperature. For earlier models, you need to make a judgment about the temperature of the grill. (When a drop of water sizzles, the grill is ready.) Although burgers can be grilled on the George Foreman grill without preheating it, most prefer to start with a hot grill to sear in juices and flavor.

Ground Beef

Select lean beef for a low-fat burger. Ground beef labeled as 85 percent lean works well. Although the George Foreman grill is designed with a nonstick surface, once it has been used for a while, you may notice that lean meats tend to stick. Lower fat content does increase the chances the beef will stick to the grill, but a quick spray of non-stick oil prevents sticking.

Forming Burgers

Form burgers in uniform size to promote even cooking on the George Foreman grill. Keep in mind that even lean ground beef shrinks when cooked. Burgers should be 3 ½ inches in diameter and ½ inch thick. Add finely minced onion or fresh herbs and spices to flavor meat, if preferred. Burgers cook quickly on this indoor grill and any raw vegetables, like onions, must be diced finely to ensure cooking completely. Breadcrumbs soaked in milk to soften may be added to the ground beef prior to forming burgers, but is up to individual taste.

Grilling

Place burgers on the preheated grill and close the cover. Check that the drip pan is properly positioned under the grill to collect juices and fats that drain from the burger. Failure to position the drip pan properly results in a sticky mess that is difficult to clean. Allow to grill for 6 to 8 minutes. Cooking time varies according to the thickness of the burger and any added ingredients. Check that the beef is brown in the center. Remove burgers and serve with your choice of condiments. Fresh tomato slice, pickles and lettuce make a delicious burger and provide a serving of vegetables with your meal.

Clean Up

Allow the George Foreman grill to cool with the cover open. Use caution that the cover does not make contact with the wall or kitchen appliances as it is hot and may produce burn marks. Keep it out of reach or children and small pets. Clean the grill with a damp paper towel or cloth.
