Organic Homemade Cleaning Products

Lemon-based organic cleaning solutions save money and the environment.

Most store-bought cleaning products are expensive and full of harsh chemicals. You can save money and avoid chemical exposure by making your own cleaning solutions from inexpensive organic products instead. Many items commonly found in the pantry offer cleaning power without the expense or health risks associated with commercial cleaning products. Does this Spark an idea?

Organic Vinegar Cleaning Solutions

Organic white distilled vinegar has a wide variety of uses as a chemical-free cleaner. Vinegar is known for its disinfecting properties, killing most mold, bacteria and germs with its high level of acidity. Use it undiluted to clean countertops, shower stalls and other surfaces where germs are a concern. For cleaning mineral buildup, soap scum, mildew or other difficult grime, make a paste of one part organic white distilled vinegar and one part baking soda for heavy-duty scrubbing. Vinegar is also an effective deodorizer, eliminating odors in microwaves, refrigerators, drains and garbage disposals.

Organic Baking Soda Cleaning Solutions

Baking soda isn't just for making cookies. It has long been a traditional cleaning product, commonly used for absorbing refrigerator odors and making scrubbing compounds. A paste of equal parts organic baking soda and water creates a chemical-free alternative to cleaning powders like Ajax or Comet. For a mildly abrasive cleaning product that won't scratch finishes, sprinkle baking soda on a damp sponge. Baking soda's deodorizing properties make it ideal for sprinkling in the bottom of your trash cans to cut down on garbage odors. To remove chemical residue from non-organic produce, dissolve several tablespoons of organic baking soda in a pot or large bowl and use it to rinse fruits and vegetables prior to consumption.

Organic Lemon Cleaning Solutions

Citrus-based cleaners are popular because of their ability to remove stains, odors and sticky residues. The high acidity of citrus fruit gives lemons the power to eliminate most harmful pathogens. Organic lemons offer a chemical-free answer to many common household cleaning problems. Shine and disinfect stainless steel surfaces in the kitchen by wiping them with undiluted lemon juice on a damp cloth. Remove stains from plastic cutting boards by soaking them with lemon juice. To make your own chemical-free polish for wood floors or furniture, combine equal parts organic olive oil and organic lemon juice; apply the solution in a circular motion using a rag to make wood finishes shine.
