Cheap Healthy Food Through Vegetable Gardening Information

Grow a variety of healthy food for very little money.

One of the most common excuses for not losing weight is the belief that fattening food is cheaper than healthy food. But lack of money should not be an excuse for not eating healthy vegetables. If you have access to some soil and seeds, you can grow your own healthy food for very little money.

Gardening

Millions of people grow their own healthy vegetables every year, from people with small container gardens on balconies to those with huge gardens filled with rows of produce. People in urban areas are turning vacant lots into community gardens, creating food while improving the neighborhood. Start small if you are new to gardening, and only grow what you like to eat.

Cheap Food

You can lower the cost of buying vegetables by buying in-season and buying frozen vegetables, But the cheapest vegetables are those you grow yourself. Depending on your setup and the equipment you have, you might need to make some initial purchases such as planters or a shovel. You also need to buy seeds for each type of plant you grow, although one seed packet should be more than enough for each vegetable. The only other investment is your time, and you can add this in small bits throughout each week. This small outlay of cash can provide you with fresh vegetables to supply your kitchen all summer and fall, with some to freeze or can for winter.

Healthy Food

The minute you pick a vegetable it starts to lose nutrients and flavor. By the time you get fresh vegetables home from the grocery store or even the farmer's market, days might have passed since they were picked. This food isn't unhealthy, but food you pick and eat right away from your own garden is even healthier and better tasting. Even the food you pick to can or freeze has more nutrients and fresher flavor.

Variety of Foods

It's easier and cheaper to experiment with different vegetables when you grow them yourself. You can buy a packet of seeds in most garden centers for a dollar or less, and it's not a lot of work to plant a short row of a new type of vegetable just to try it. Do this with a half dozen types that you've never tried before, and you'll have a good variety of nutrients for your family's table.
