Due to a growing demand for natural dairy products that are non-genetically modified and free from pesticides or growth hormones, the organic farming industry has become a rapidly growing industry. Organic dairy producers in California are family-owned or small-business operations. The California Certified Organic Farmers organization and the United States Department of Agriculture certify their products.
Organic Pastures
Based in Fresno, Organic Pastures is family-owned, and produces raw dairy products including milk, butter, cheeses and quephor, a drinkable yoghurt made from kefir grains in the Russian tradition. The farm has been in operation since 1950 and also provides raw organic beef. In addition to producing dairy products, Organic Pastures also manufactures kombucha, a non-dairy drink made from fermented tea which is known as the "health elixir" due to its immune-building benefits. The cows are naturally raised without any growth hormones or antibiotics; their feed is free from genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Organic Pastures is recognized by the National Farmers Organization.

Clover Stornetta Farms
With three family farms located in Sonoma, Marin and Mendocino counties, Clover Stornetta is one of the first modern farms to provide milk free of bovine growth hormones. The company has been in operation since the 1900s, and produces organic dairy products like yogurt, cheese, butter and sour cream. Clover Farms works in partnership with family farms in the Petaluma region such as Bodega Farms, JLT Ranch and McClure Dairy. The company has received certification and achievement awards from the U.S. Department of Agriculture organic division. Clover Stornetta Farms is the first and only diary farm to receive a recognition award from the American Humane Association. Other awards include the North Coast Excellence Certification and Quality Certification Services.

Straus Family Creamery
Straus Family Creamery is a family-owned organic dairy farm, which has been in operation since 1941 in Marshall on the Tomales Bay. All of the dairy products are in accordance with the United States Department of Agriculture organic regulations and are certified by California Certified Organic Farmers. The dairy farm employs "health farm practices" by grazing milk cows on a rotational basis and providing cows with a nutritionally balanced diet comprised of grains, hay, legumes and fresh grasses. The cows are free of any hormones, including bovine growth hormones, and are milked twice daily. The farm produces milk, cheeses, ice cream, yoghurt and butter on site using fresh pasteurized milk.
