Being a househusband can be a very rewarding job.
In recent years, it has become more common for men to stay at home and take care of the children and the house while their wives go to work. A househusband is the male equivalent of a housewife. The duties and responsibilities of a househusband are set by him and his wife. Because each couple and each househusband are different, the role of househusband varies. However, several duties are usually attributed to a househusband or a housewife.
Child Care
Usually a househusband will choose to stay at home to take care of the couple's children. Choosing to stay at home and raise the children is often more cost-effective than sending the kids to a day care facility when they are very young. In some situations, a househusband will home-school the children as they get older instead of sending them to a public or private school.
Many househusbands enjoy the time they spend with their children, which is generally much more than they would spend with them if the househusband had a full-time job outside the home.
Cleaning
Often a househusband and his wife will divide household cleaning chores so that a larger proportion of them fall upon the househusband. Cleaning duties of a househusband can include sweeping and vacuuming floors, scrubbing and cleaning bathrooms, doing laundry, dusting surfaces and making sure that the house generally appears clean and tidy. In addition, if young children live in the household, the househusband is responsible for cleaning up after them when their mother is not home.
Cooking
Because his wife often does not return to the household until dinnertime, a househusband is often expected to prepare dinner for the family several days a week. In addition, a househusband must prepare meals for himself and for the children during the day when his wife is at work.
Pet Care
If the family has a pet or several pets, a househusband is responsible for their care during the day. Taking care of household pets means that a househusband must walk or exercise them and feed them throughout the day.
Other Housework
A househusband may be responsible for various other household tasks, such as repairing and fixing household appliances and other household equipment. A househusband can serve as an electrician, plumber, auto mechanic and general repairman for his household in addition to his other duties.
