Ceramic Grinding Tools

Grind ceramic items with handheld or larger grinding tools.

Grinding is the process of removing sections or particles of material using abrasive particles. This process is commonly used to give hard material like stones and ceramic a finished look. You need the proper tools to grind ceramic, and these tools range from large workstations to smaller handheld tools. You usually can purchase these tools from online vendors or from home-improvement stores. Does this Spark an idea?

Angle Grinder

An angle grinder features a rotating, circular blade that is only half exposed. The other half of the tool is hidden beneath a half-moon piece of metal. This tool has two handles, one on the back and one on the side. This helps you better control the device, and it diminishes tool vibrations, reducing user fatigue. You can use this tool for grinding, cutting and polishing ceramic. You can also use this tool to sharpen your other tools and to sand down the ceramic after you grind it. To use this tool, slightly angle the blade to the side and run it along your material.

Grinding Wheel

A grinding wheel is comprised of a rotating base and a grit. The grits range in color depending on the material used to create it. The grit is made of different material ranging from silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, ceramic or a composite material. These grits are replaceable because they will dull as you use them. To use a grinding wheel, turn the rotating base on, and then place the ceramic against the rotating grit. Start out on the lowest speed, and gradually increase it. Always wear gloves and goggles when operating this machine to reduce injury.

Die Grinder

This is a handheld tool that has a rotating grinding stone for a head, and a handle with a lever. The grinding stone is small, but you can use this tool for grinding small areas or for finishing work. Typically, die grinders are air tools, which means that you need an air compressor to use it. You can use the compressed air to exert different amounts of pressure on your work surface. To use this tool, hold down the lever and run the head against your ceramic.

Bench Grinder

A bench grinder is a large tool that you must secure to a table to operate. The standard bench grinder is for midsized workpieces, while the pedestal grinder is for large workpieces. Generally, a pedestal grinder sits or is connected to a garage or workspace floor. These tools have rotating abrasive wheels, but only a small section of the wheel is exposed. A metal three-quarter moon covers the rest of it. Hold your ceramic up against the wheel, and rotate the ceramic when you are done grinding one side of it.
