Warm Smoked Turkey

Smoked turkey can be warmed in the oven or microwave.

For many people, the favorite part of a turkey meal is the next day's leftovers. Turkey sandwiches, turkey hash, turkey soup and sliced turkey with warm gravy are crowd pleasers. Smoked turkeys are cooked by smoking a whole turkey or turkey breast slowly and indirectly over a smoky fire. Whether you need to reheat a whole smoked turkey or leftover pieces, doing it correctly ensures a moist and flavorful meal. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

Oven

1. Preheat the oven to at least 325 degrees F.

2. Slice any remaining breast meat off the bone with a sharp knife. Cut away the wings, thighs and legs with the bone intact or removed. The United States Department of Agriculture advises that smoked or cooked turkey may be eaten cold or warm.

3. Lay the smoked turkey pieces in a shallow baking dish or pan. To keep the turkey moist, pour ¼ to ½ cup of turkey broth, chicken broth or water over the meat and cover the dish with aluminum foil.

4. Place the pan in the oven and reheat the turkey until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F when a food thermometer is inserted into the thickest piece of meat. Depending on the oven and amount of turkey in the pan, warming may take 15 to 20 minutes or longer.

Microwave

5. Select a glass baking dish or a microwave-safe container as neither metal nor aluminum can be used in a microwave. Pour ¼ to ½ cup of broth or water over the turkey to maintain moistness.

6. Cover the baking dish with a paper towel or plastic wrap if the microwave-safe dish does not have a lid. Covering the turkey will prevent any splatters against the walls or door of the microwave and will keep the moisture in the dish.

7. Microwave the turkey until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees when the food thermometer is inserted into the thickest turkey piece. Microwave ovens vary greatly in cooking times, and if an owner's manual isn't available, microwave the turkey on a medium setting in one-minute increments until the desired temperature is reached.
