Chicken Crafts

Chicken crafts are a fun way to educate children about the bird.

Chicken crafts provide a fun way for children to learn about chickens while creating art projects to display. Many chicken crafts can be done by children of all ages; however, younger children may require some adult assistance for cutting and gluing. Chicken crafts are also appropriate Easter activities.

Chicken Purse

To make a chicken purse, you will need to cut a paper plate in half. Paint one half of the plate yellow, and allow it to dry completely. Line the plate halves up, and secure them along the rounded edges with staples. Make a beak by cutting a small triangle from a piece of construction paper and gluing it to the yellow topside of one end of the paper plate. Next, glue a craft eye next to the beak. Finally, fold a pipe cleaner and staple both ends of it to the unpainted half to form the purse's handle.

Rooster Puppet

Have your child trace both of her hands onto a sheet of red construction paper. Carefully cut out the tracings. Glue or tape a hand to opposite sides of the back of a of a 6-inch paper plate. The fingers of each hand should be pointing outward. Next, create a beak by cutting two small triangles from an orange or yellow sheet of construction paper. Position them on the paper plate to resemble an open beak along an edge that does not contain the hand cut-outs. Glue a craft eye right above the beak. Finally, attach a long craft stick to the backside of the plate using either glue or tape.

Spring Chicken Craft

To make the spring chicken craft, cut a quarter-inch slit in the bottom of a yellow disposable cup. Fold a 1-inch square of red felt in half, and tie one end of a 2-1/2-inch length of string around the center of the felt. Pull the opposite end of the string through the cup until the felt meets the the bottom of the cup. Tie the loose end of the string to a 2-by-1-inch piece of sponge. Flip the cup so that the bottom is facing upward, and create a face by gluing craft eyes and an orange triangle to one side. Allow the glue to dry completely. To make the chicken "cluck", dampen the sponge and use your thumb and pointer finger to fold the sponge around the string, near the opening of the cup. Pinching the sponge and string tightly, quickly yank the sponge down the string, 1 or 2 inches at a time.

Chicken Egg Craft

Using a free-hand design or a template, cut the following pieces from sheets of construction paper: A red comb (the area on top of a chicken's head), two orange wings, and a yellow or orange triangular beak. Glue the wings and comb onto a yellow plastic egg (you may want to secure the plastic egg shut with tape prior to beginning this craft). Glue craft eyes to the top of an empty side of the egg. Finally, glue the beak underneath the eyes.
