What Are The Requirements For Culinary School

Students interested in the culinary field need to find out what admission requirements are at the schools they are interested in attending. Some requirements deal with paperwork, while others deal with actual culinary experience.

Admission Packet

Some culinary schools may require only your admission application and the admission fee; others will require your high school transcript or GED, letters of reference from employers or instructors and a resume detailing your culinary experience.

Admission Requirements

You may be asked about your knowledge of weights and measures and skills at reading/using recipes. You may also be asked about conferences you've attended.

Work Experience

Some of the more competitive culinary schools may require prior work experience as a cook. You might be able to substitute conference or seminar participation for work experience, but you will have to ask the admissions staff.

Knowledge of Cooking

Some culinary schools may ask about your knowledge of cooking as well as any skills and techniques you have acquired for converting recipes. Conference attendance may help round out this requirement.

Essay

Students applying for admission to a program of education in a professional field are often required to submit an essay. This essay may be as simple as why you want a culinary career, or it may be more formal.
