Las Vegas, Nevada, is one of the world's great leisure capitals with more casinos and resort hotels than any other location in the United States. It is also home to a large selection of language schools that teach English as a second language, professional English for non-native speakers and a range of foreign languages.
International Academy of English
The International Academy of English has two locations in the center of Las Vegas -- one near the airport and the other just to the west of the Strip. The school specializes in teaching International students speak English. There are eight levels of English language instruction ranging from no English ability to near fluency, and classes are open to new students every Monday.
The International Academy has computer centers at each location for study and language practice use. If you complete the two advanced-level classes successfully, Southern State University will waive your (Test of English as a Foreign Language) TOEFL requirement. Classes are arranged according to students' needs and schedules. Rates for 18 hours of sessions per week over four weeks are $350; for 30 hours per week over four weeks, it is $600 as of February 2011. The school also supplies student accommodation at additional cost if required.
Yale Language Center
Yale Language Center is located about a mile west of the Strip near West Flamingo Road and features a free parking lot and multiple language courses. English as a second language, Chinese, Japanese and TOEFL preparation are taught at the center, which is located in one of Las Vegas' predominantly Asian neighborhoods. There are four language course levels titled "Freshman" through "Senior," each consisting of 18 to 20 hours per week from Monday to Thursday and a three-week separate winter or summer ESL Camp where intensive and abbreviated studies are offered. Uceda School
The Uceda School is located about three miles east of Las Vegas Boulevard along East Desert Inn Road. The school markets itself primarily to Mexican students and displays a Mexican flag on its homepage. Uceda has been teaching English in the U.S. since 1902, has 26 locations throughout the country and has graduated more than 1 million students. Uceda offers ESL classes that combine classroom instruction with at-home website study and practice. Students are placed into classes based on language ability as determined by testing. Special discounts are given for casino workers, families and groups. Rates for the new Las Vegas campus are available on request. The school also has GED, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, traffic school and computer courses.
Shepherd School of Language
The Shepherd School of Language is located about 4.5 miles west of Las Vegas Boulevard along South Jones Boulevard. The school features six levels of ESL programs to suit students of any proficiency level. The Shepherd School welcomes students from all backgrounds into language training courses that serve as preparation for secondary education in the state of Nevada or career training options. Classes are divided into basic, low intermediate, high intermediate and advanced levels with a maximum 20 students per class. Class schedules are set with spring summer and fall eight-week sessions. An eight-week course costs $1,190 plus books and expenses as of February 2011. Housing is also available at additional cost.
