Foods To Avoid With A Wheat Allergy

Foods to Avoid with a Wheat Allergy

Wheat allergy is relatively uncommon, and a wheat-restricted diet is not easy to follow. Those who do have wheat allergies must be very cautious about what they eat. Consuming allergenic foods could result in eczema, asthma, stomach problems or anaphylaxis, a whole-body allergic reaction. Allergic reactions can begin minutes or hours after wheat consumption. Always check food labels for ingredients such as wheat flour, bran, farina, graham flour, high gluten flour, starch or semolina before purchasing foods.

Breads and Cereals

Those with wheat allergies should avoid bread with any kind of wheat flour in it. This includes white bread. They should avoid pretzels, crackers, many kinds of bakery pastries, bread crumbs, bread rolls, and breakfast foods such as pancakes and waffles.

Pasta

Any kind of pasta that contains wheat or semolina flour should be avoided. Pizza and polenta are also dangerous to those with wheat allergies.

Beverages

Beverages that use wheat in production should be avoided, including beer, root beer, and ale. Coffee substitutes and instant chocolate beverages may also contain trace amounts of wheat.

Meats

Meats to avoid include any breaded meats, as well as lunch meats, meatloaf, or any other meat with added fillers.

Chocolate

Those with wheat allergies should avoid chocolate or anything that contains chocolate.

Desserts

Desserts to avoid include ice-cream, cakes, ice cream cones, graham crackers, donuts, cookies and pudding mixes. Most cake icings should also be avoided.

Eggs

Eggs are generally safe to eat but should be avoided when they are souffléd or prepared with products that may contain wheat traces, such as heavy creams.

Sauces

Caution should be exercised with most gravies, as many contain flour as a thickening agent. Some thick salad dressings also contain wheat products and should be avoided.

Dairy

Most dairy products are safe, but any powdered or malted milk products may contain wheat. Cottage cheese with modified starch should be avoided.
