Preserve Rice Paper

Preserving rice paper is not a difficult task if you have the right materials and a little understanding of what rice paper is. Rice paper will breakdown relatively quickly if exposed to moisture and sunlight since it is such a delicate material. A good frame is one of your considerations since this will help reduce the potential of moisture exposure. It will also keep dust off of the artifact which is also detrimental to it. Rice paper will also breakdown because of the oils in the hand so great care needs to be taken when handling it.

Instructions

1. Open the frame and remove the front glass panel and clean with water and a soft cloth. Allow this to dry thoroughly.

2. Remove all of the dust from the frame. This is done by wiping every portion of the frame with a dry soft cloth. Residual dust can cause a great deal of damage.

3. Place the dried glass into the frame. Make sure you are wearing gloves to keep from transferring your hand oils.

4. Place the artifact into the frame. Make sure you are wearing gloves when you touch it. Center the artifact.

5. Replace the back section of the frame. An air tight seal is assured with the frame since it will have a felt backing. This will also keep moisture from the item.

6. Hang or place the frame in a location that has minimal sunlight. Even though it is behind glass it can still degrade from sunlight.
