Given the high cost of gas, propane and food, most people are looking for ways to feed their families on a tight budget. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Determine your grocery budget before go shopping. One sure way of sticking to this price is to use cash. Take only the amount of cash with you that you have set for spending. Leave all debit and credit cards at home.
2. Ask friends, relatives and neighbors to save grocery coupons from the weekly newspaper for you. Even if they clip those coupons they will use before giving them to you, there will probably be a number of coupons left for you to save money also.
3. Look online for coupons for the foods your family likes best. Many manufacturers offer online printable coupons for items ranging from frozen foods to zwieback toast. There are also a number of coupon club websites where you can download and print coupons.
4. Buy in bulk, where possible, on the foods your family likes to eat. Beans, rice and pasta can usually be found at your local health food store. By not paying for fancy packaging, the price per pound goes down. The same holds true for meat. Meats can be purchased in large boxes and repackaged at home to save money.
5. Cook from scratch as often as possible. Buying prepackaged foods adds to the cost. Even chopping your own vegetables like carrots and celery will save money. Although it’s convenient to buy many things already prepared, the money saved can be used to buy other ingredients.
6. Go vegetarian for several meals a week. Meat is the largest part of most food bills. By eating meatless meals only occasionally, not only are you saving money, you will also be eating healthier. Check your local library for vegetarian cookbooks and find dishes with ingredients that your family enjoys eating.
7. Look for lesser cuts of meat if you must have meat at every meal. Chicken and turkey are always cheaper than beef. Pork generally costs less than beef also. Watch for sales on any meat, and stock up.
