Don't know what to get your dad for Father's Day? Buying a gift for him can be a challenge. He may already have everything he needs or he may be the kind of man who won't ask for something if he needs it. Perhaps you have some ideas, but you aren't sure what brand of drill to buy or what size shirt your dad wears. Here are some tips that might help your quest to find the right gift.

1. Give your dad a gift card or gift certificate. Does he have a favorite sporting goods or home supply store? Don't forget his favorite restaurant or electronics or office supply store. Think about what dad likes to do in his spare time. Does he hit the gym? Spend time on the golf course? Like to work in the yard? Try a gift certificate for his favorite workout spot, the golf course or driving range, or garden center. Consider his interests and use your imagination. Gift cards or certificates allow any dad to choose what he wants. That way, you don't end up returning something that doesn't fit or the wrong kind of tool. Gift cards allow your father to take his time and choose what he wants.
2. Choose a gift of entertainment. What are dad's favorite movies? Does he like action, western, or comedy? Choose several DVDs among his favorites so he can watch them anytime. Add a box of microwave popcorn and make a batch of his favorite cookies to add to the package for a complete movie night gift. Or, treat your dad to a night at the movies. If your budget allows, treat him to dinner before or after, too.
3. Give your father the gift of time. Are there projects around the house that he has been too busy to get to? Make up your own gift certificate that is good for a fix-up project, washing the car, or some yard work. Dad will appreciate one less thing on his to-do list.
4. Buy your dad tickets to a sporting event. What's his favorite sport? If the major league team tickets are beyond your budget, check out the minor league or local college teams. Or, purchase tickets for an upcoming event that he would like to attend, like a concert, trade show, or themed expo. Make a day of it and tag along with him, then treat him to lunch, too.
5. Choose a personalized gift, such as a coffee mug, T-shirt, pen or key chain. Dad might even appreciate a personalized mouse pad with a cute picture of the grandkids. Photo processing centers have many custom gift options; many local and online stores offer different options too.
6. Take your father on an outing he'll enjoy such as fishing, hunting, surfing, a hot air balloon ride or sightseeing. The possibilities are endless; check with the local chamber of commerce, hunting or fishing associations, clubs, tourism bureaus and more for ideas.
