Ways To Spice Up Brown Rice

Brown rice is a rich source of vitamins B3, B1 and B6.

Brown rice offers more vitamins, iron and fiber than comparable servings of white rice. A cup of brown rice provides 14 percent of daily fiber requirements, making it a staple of many diets designed to improve health and promote weight loss. A good way to encourage yourself to incorporate brown rice into your diet is by spicing it up with condiments, spices and cooking techniques. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Water Substitutes

One way to add extra flavor to brown rice is by substituting cooking water with chicken, beef or vegetable broth. But while preparing rice in a flavorful broth infuses it with spices and flavors, it also increases the amount of sodium and fat. Another substitute often used in Thai brown rice dishes includes cutting the water by half and replacing it with unsweetened coconut milk.

Condiments

Simply stirring a condiment into plain brown rice is enough to give it a delicious new flavor. Soy sauce gives it a salty kick, and a spoonful of salsa provides a great Southwestern flavor. Sriracha is a chili-based condiment that adds a uniquely Thai flavor to brown rice. And don't forget your favorite hot sauce, which can do wonders to heat up an otherwise bland dish.

Cooking Spices

A little pinch of spice can go a long way to add flavor to brown rice. Add turmeric or curry powder to the water while the rice is cooking to give it an Indian flavor and a vibrant yellow color. A crumbled nugget of saffron adds color and imparts a sweet hay-like taste. Other spices that pair well include red pepper, cumin, garlic, cinnamon, cloves, thyme, rosemary, bay leaves, basil and cayenne.

Other Additions

Spices, condiments and stocks aren't the only way to get more flavor into your brown rice. Zest some lemon or lime into your brown rice to give it a tangy, citrus flavor, or cook up the pot with minced garlic. Ginger is another good addition -- slices can be added directly into the rice while cooking and removed before serving.
