Projects For Culinary Arts Students

Try a cookbook that pairs wine and food.

Culinary arts is a branch of arts that studies food, recipes and the cultural influences behind the foods we eat. A culinary arts student often specializes in a particular region or cuisine and becomes a chef or pastry chef. Course projects offer students the opportunity to show off what they have learned and their personal culinary creativity. When given the opportunity to choose a project, a student should showcase real-life culinary applications.

Green Cooking and Kitchens

Going green is a movement not only concerned with monitoring energy and waste, but also with food. Green cooking involves the use of organic products, personal farming and even raising livestock for slaughter and use in cooking. A green cooking project can focus on modern methods used in a traditional kitchen that can be replaced with green ideas such as growing your own produce and herbs, reducing energy usage in the kitchen or purchasing products locally.

Opening a Restaurant

The majority of culinary arts students enter their school career with the hope of owning their own restaurant one day. For an intense learning experience, see what it is like to open a restaurant by creating a plan just as if you were opening one. Work on this project solo or in a group and dive into extensive research. The project should include an opening budget, d cor, restaurant design and even menus. Shadow another restaurant owner to find inspiration and advice on guide your project for a mock restaurant opening.

Creating a Food Truck

Food trucks have grown in popularity, especially with television networks such as Food Network and The Cooking Channel showcasing food truck competitions. Create your own food truck with an innovative idea for your culinary arts project. Similar to opening a restaurant, a food truck project should involve a budget, menus and tools needed to produce the food. A food truck does not have the same space as a restaurant; therefore, the challenge is to come up with a creative menu, image and storage plan that can function with your overall idea.

Cookbooks

Upon graduation, many culinary arts students go on to a career in the culinary world, and many create their own cookbook. Cookbooks should be creative and something new to the market. Create your own revolutionary cookbook for your project. Cookbooks need a theme, such as Southern cooking, fusion or cake mixes, on which you will base your recipes and ideas. Have a few copies of your cookbook printed and bound at a copy center. Remember to use historical references, and research what has made a recipe popular and how you changed it to make it your own.
