Start A Home Business In San Antonio

Designate an office area in your San Antonio home to begin doing business.

As a San Antonio professional or business person, you may want to take your talent or commodity into your own hands at some point. Starting a small business at home is a good idea if you want to become truly independent. You may not want or be able to afford an external office space early on; so you can set up an office in your San Antonio home and run the new small business from there. Complete the appropriate new business registration forms and devise a strong business plan to get started.

Instructions

1. Write out a business plan to show that you understand your new San Antonio home business's industry. If you can, consult San Antonio-area business owners who are already established. Your completed business plan will help you to present and see the intended path of your business. You may also need the business plan if it's necessary to apply for additional funding. Before getting started, visit the Small Business Administration website to study writing tips and strategies for your business plan (see Resources).

2. Determine the amount of space you will be using for your business. For tax purposes, as a home business owner you'll need to show what portion of your home is for your office. You may need to explain how the area is used to perform essential home business functions. Contact the San Antonio Economic Development Department to discuss local zoning laws and regulations that pertain to home businesses (see Resources).

3. If you do not have enough start-up capital on hand, seek business loans and grants. Consult the San Antonio Economic Development Department to discuss grant and loan opportunities. Be sure to bring your business plan to any expected discussion, because it serves both as a reference for yourself and as a necessary point of review for investors.

4. Decide on a legal structure for your San Antonio home business. Choose a corporation, limited liability company (LLC) or partnership. Complete the corresponding registration form, which you can download from the Texas Secretary of State website or Texas Online, the state's official online portal (see Resources). Enclose any registration fees with the completed form.

5. Wait for your San Antonio home business to receive its Employer Identification Number (EIN) in an email or through postal service. Use the business EIN as tax identification when required.

6. Obtain necessary permits or licenses for your San Antonio home business. If you're not sure which may apply to your San Antonio home business, visit the United States Business website's section on licenses and permits (see Resources).
