New Retail Store Decoration Ideas

Launching a new store gives you a chance to stand out from the crowd.

Opening a new retail store is not easy. There are hundreds of things to think about, from stock to staff to start-up costs, and hundreds of decisions to make. How you decorate your new store is a key part of your marketing strategy. Your new retail store decoration needs to communicate several messages to customers. It needs to say that your store is an exciting place to shop but also that it is a reliable supplier of quality goods.

Launch

Launching a new retail store gives you the opportunity to make a big splash. You can even think of it as being like a big party, to which everyone is invited. You might want to try to create a fun party atmosphere with a red carpet leading into the store, and inside, neon lighting and gold and silver balloons. According to retail analyst Edgar A. Falk, if you create excitement in your store, the cash registers will keep ringing.

Window

Women's enterprise champion Lynne Franks advises her clients to make good use of their store windows when opening a new retail store. Franks recommends quirky ideas to attract press and public alike, such as human mannequins. Your first launch window should be out of the ordinary, according to Franks, aspiring to the level of a work of art. You could create 3D versions of famous paintings in your window. Or build a rainbow from different colored products that you stock.

Fantasy

Interior Design magazine enjoys the fantasy approach to new retail store decoration, as typified by Paris department store Printemps. First, slate was used to cover display areas in the basement, and on the ground floor and second floor. This was done to show off designer goods, such as handbags, jewelry and watches, in the best possible light. The floor was covered with a mosaic featuring an art nouveau flower design and dozens of pure white polycarbonate flowers were attached to the ceiling. Gleaming stainless steel sculptures and ribbons added to the fantasy theme.

Other Ideas

Decorate your new retail store with simple motifs, themes, textures, objects or accessories to convey a sense of elegant understatement. Choose colors for your new store with care. According to retail analyst Rick Segel, burgundies and grays convey a sense of tradition. Red and yellow, according to Segel, are strictly for kids' shops. Highlight the newness of your store by decorating it with the latest gadgets, furniture, art and icons of popular culture.
