One of the most important aspects of owning a retail store is how it is designed. You should account for the demographics of your target customers as well as complement the merchandise you're selling. Make sure that you remember a few key guidelines when planning the design for your retail store.
Jewelry Store
How you design your jewelry store will depend on a number of factors: whether your products are high-end or of different price points; the average age of your clientele; the brands you carry. For example, if your store sells body jewelry, you can use a bold color palette and modern furnishings and fixtures, but if you sell luxury designer watches, you should go for a design that is sleek, subtle, sophisticated, and that doesn't detract from the jewelry you're selling.
Clothing
The way you design your clothing store will depend upon your clientele. If you have a general store that has clothing for men, women and children, keep the décor neutral, and separate each section with decorative signage.
If you have a men's clothing store, you should go with a masculine color palette, and go for fixtures with subtle design elements. If you incorporate patterns into your décor, try stripes or geometric designs. Color palettes for men's stores: navy blue, light blue, white, and silver; black, silver, and white; tan, brown, and cobalt blue; pale yellow, gray, black, and white.
Women's clothing stores should aim to make customers feel pampered and welcome. Ensure that you have a seating area in your store, preferably near your fitting rooms. Mirrors should be incorporated into your store's design if your clothing is for women, and you should be sure to have ample lighting.
Bath, Body, and Cosmetics
A bath and body, cosmetics or perfume store should have a relaxing atmosphere and be organized by scent or product type. For example, if you have a store that sells organic soap, the fruity scents should be separate from the woodsy ones, and in a perfume store, citrus-based scents should be separate from musky scents.
Keep the décor in your store neutral unless you have a specific audience, such as women or teens. Even if your products are geared toward women, you don't want to turn the store off to men; men buy gifts for women often, and they won't shop in your store in they don't feel comfortable there.
You can go for a spa-like design by making your walls crisp white or light aqua and getting brushed-aluminum shelving and fixtures. Use wicker or rattan baskets to hold lose merchandise such as soaps and candles, and stage a sink area for customers with crisp white towels so that they can wash samples off their hands and arms.
Home Accessories
When designing a home accessories store, your goal should be to show customers examples of how items can fit into their homes. The way you set up your products should serve as inspiration for customers and give them something they can duplicate at home.
Ensure that different types of housewares and home accessories are separated; give kitchen and living space items their own area, bathroom accessories a separate space, and make an area just for bedroom pieces. Put at least one stationary piece of furniture in each area that you can decorate with merchandise. For example, in your kitchen area, you can stage an island, put a freestanding sink in the bathroom section and have a dressed bed in the bedroom section. You will change the decoration of these areas as different seasons approach and new merchandise arrives.
