Longlasting Survival Foods

White rice lasts much longer than brown rice.

When planning a wilderness expedition, packing a survival kit or stocking your home's disaster preparedness chest, survival foods are important. Pack survival foods that are very long-lasting; it is impossible to know how long you would need to rely on the supply, and you want to ensure that the food isn't spoiled if you ever actually need it.

Protein Bars

Protein or meal replacement bars should form part of your emergency food chest. The reason these bars are so practical is twofold. First, they provide you with a large jolt of energy and nutrients that you need in a survival situation. Second, they last a very long time; some brands will last for years. The foil wrappers ensure that the bars stay completely dry. The length of time survival food lasts depends on its ability to stay dry.

White Rice

White rice is bulky and not always convenient to carry on a trip. However, if stocking up on survival foods for a disaster situation, rice is a very solid option, as it does not spoil easily. It lasts for as long as a decade and stays edible. However, if you want to store rice a very long time, you need to seal it well to prevent insect infestations.

MRE

MRE stands for "Meals, Ready-to-Eat." MREs are special survival foods used extensively in the military and also sold in large quantities to backpackers and hikers who need solid nutrition that fits in a small area. MREs are a total meal replacement that make for good survival food. The shelf life of an MRE in a sealed package is at least two years. Like most survival foods, the cooler and dryer MREs are kept, the longer they will last.

Grains and Beans

Dried grains and beans last almost indefinitely. Whether it's soybeans, other dried beans or good wheat, storage of dried grains and beans in a survival unit ensures a long-lived food supply. If you want to ensure the maximum life of these types of foods, get them nitrogen-packed. This extends the lifespan of these hardy foods even further.
