Uses For Organic Puffed Spelt

Whole spelt grain is puffed to make a cereal.

Find organic puffed spelt, sold in bags or cereal boxes, in your health food store or co-op, or in the natural foods section of many larger supermarkets. Some markets also carry the puffed whole grains in bulk, allowing you to purchase as much or as little as you'd like. The light, airy cereal is nothing more than air-puffed spelt grain and, depending on brand, salt and a sweetener, usually honey, cane sugar or agave syrup. Add this to my Recipe Box.

A Bowl of Cereal

Organic puffed spelt can be eaten just as you would any puffed breakfast grain, such as puffed rice, wheat or corn. Add soy, rice, almond or animal milk and eat it plain, or personalize your bowl of cereal with fruit. Try sliced bananas, dried fruits like raisins, cranberries or chopped figs, or seasonal fresh berries for a range of nutrients and fiber.

Breakfast Or Granola Bars

Bake organic puffed spelt into your favorite breakfast bar recipe to add nutty, whole grain flavor and nutrition. If your recipe calls for a puffed rice, corn or wheat cereal, substitute an equal amount of puffed spelt. In recipes that don't call for puffed cereal, experiment by substituting puffed spelt for half the amount of the other grains called for. For example, if your recipe asks for 1 cup oatmeal, use 1/2 cup oatmeal and 1/2 cup spelt.

Dessert Bars

For a sweet treat with whole grain goodness, try substituting organic puffed spelt for the puffed rice cereal called for in marshmallow crispy bars. The puffed spelt will be slightly larger and denser than the rice, but it still has the airy crunch of the rice cereal. Add dried fruit, chocolate chips or peanut butter for a more personalized dessert bar.

Bird Food

You may not be the only one who enjoys puffed spelt. The whole, organic grain can also be one component of a homemade baked cookie birds can enjoy. Puffed spelt combines with a variety of grains, seeds, spices, coconut oil and pumpkin puree, then is baked, cooled and placed in your bird's cage, or hung outside on a tree branch for feathered friends to nibble.
