Southern California Culinary Schools

Culinary arts is a competitive career. Choosing the right training is essential in your development as a chef. In Southern California, there are several schools that can help you prepare for a career in culinary arts. Culinary arts schools usually offer courses in cooking, pastry and restaurant management.


Laguna Culinary Arts


The Laguna Culinary Arts school located in Laguna Beach, California features a professional chef program. This program is a six-month course that trains students to become qualified chefs by integrating classic and modern cooking techniques. LCA teaches students kitchen management skills with hands-on training. Courses include teaching on world cuisine, menu writing and pastry skills. Classes are cumulative and build on skills learned in previous lessons.


San Diego Culinary Institute


The San Diego Culinary Institute offers two programs: the Commis Culinary Method and The Sweet Kitchen. The Commis Culinary Method is a course that concentrates first on foundational courses that build basic skills followed by more advanced teachings that incorporate basic concepts into complex and sophisticated dishes. The groups are small with limited class sizes. The Sweet Kitchen consists of more than 1,000 hours of training in making breads, breakfast pastries, cakes, pies, tarts, sauces, chocolates and other desserts. Financial aid is also available.


Art Institute of California- San Diego


The Art Institute of California -- San Diego is a branch of the Art Institutes, which has schools located throughout the country. The school offers courses in media arts, design, fashion and culinary. The culinary programs include opportunities to earn an associates degree in areas such as baking and pastry and culinary arts. Bachelor's degree opportunities are also available in culinary management and hospitality food and beverage management. Degree programs are offered on a year-round basis with enrollment periods four times per year.


Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Los Angeles


Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Los Angeles is another multi-campus culinary school with a branch in Los Angeles. This school only offers diploma and associate degree programs. Diplomas in culinary arts and pastry involve fewer courses than the associate programs in culinary and pastry occupational studies. The school teaches essential cooking skills that can be applied to multiple cuisines from around the world. Financial aid is available here for qualifying students.
