Snack Food Ideas

Sushi makes for a great snack.

Deciding upon a snack food can be a tough decision, as there are so many different snack ideas to choose from, from fruits and vegetables to grains and meats. Sometimes, snacks can get repetitive and boring, so it's best to switch it up and try something new once in a while. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are the simplest and healthiest snack foods, and offer a variety of choices. Apples can be cut up into slices and eaten plain, or served with peanut butter, caramel or your favorite yogurt. Bananas are another snack food option that make for a slightly different snack when you freeze the banana for 30 minutes for eating. Berries such as blueberries, strawberries and raspberries are other snacks full of healthy antioxidants, which may help protect your body against disease and infection. Serve berries plain or with a dollop of whipped cream. Celery and carrots are simple snack foods that can be served with a healthy bean dip like hummus. Make your own hummus as a snack by combining garbanzo beans, olive oil, garlic, salt, lemon juice and tahini in a blender or food processor. Lettuce wraps, commonly served in Asian restaurants, are a versatile snack that can be served with chicken, rice and hoisin sauce.

Grains and Legumes

Whole grains are another healthy snack choice that offer many different options. One easy snack food idea is to overcook brown rice by 5 or 10 minutes so it's extra sticky and form the rice into bite-sized balls mixed with peanut butter, soy sauce and sauteed onions. Quinoa is another healthy grain that can be served as a snack food. Drizzle quinoa with a little fresh lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper. Orzo is another snack grain that can be served with sun-dried tomatoes, feta cheese and olive oil. Another snack idea: toast some bread, and slice up the toast into small pieces and serve with hummus. Legumes and beans are versatile snack foods, too. Make black beans burgers by combining black beans with onions, bread crumbs, soy sauce, mustard and cumin. Refried beans are a snack food that pairs well with salsa.

Meats and Cheeses

Italian meats like salami and prosciutto are easy, versatile snack foods. Combine a piece of salami or prosciutto on a toothpick with an olive and a piece of cheese for a quick snack. Ham is another meat that pairs well with a variety of foods. Try a piece of ham with fruit like melon or honeydew. Wrap a tender piece of beef with thick-cut bacon and cook it in the oven. Snack on different cheeses combined with grapes and crackers, such as cheddar, gouda, havarti, brie and Gorgonzola. Cook a rotisserie chicken or turkey, shred the meat and serve miniature barbecue chicken sandwiches as snacks. Pulled pork is another possible snack food that can be served as miniature sandwiches. Sushi is a snack food that comes in a variety of styles and flavors.
