Keeping your home comfortably cool in the summer and warm in the winter can be a challenge. Expensive cooling and heating bills are another issue that most of us can relate to. One cost-effective solution is to install insulated curtains on all the windows in your home. Insulated curtains are energy-efficient and can help your home to be eco-friendly by cutting down on the use of air conditioning. You can still maintain your home's style by choosing any decorator fabric you like to complement your design. Insulating material also comes in many colors. These curtains are a great way to be chic and sensible.

1. Measure the window. The curtains need to be larger than the window by two to three inches horizontally and extend above the window by at least two to three inches. The length of the curtain is up to you.
2. Choose fabric to coordinate with the room. The fabric choice should be a heavier, non-sheer material that can support the weight of the insulation lining.
3. Cut the curtain fabric and the insulated lining to the determined measurements.
4. Align the two materials with the right sides facing out. With the lining facing you, fold over the frayed edges twice until you have a clean edge about one inch wide. Pin the edges neatly, placing the pins approximately two inches apart. Repeat this process on all four sides of the curtain.
5. Sew a straight seam along edge of the curtain, removing the pins as you go. Complete all four sides of the curtain.
6. To make the pocket for the curtain rod, find the top of your curtain and fold it over approximately three inches (or more depending on your curtain rod) to meet the lined side of the curtain. Place pins along the bottom of the fold as a place holder. Sew a straight seam along the edge, removing the pins as you go. To achieve a crisp look, iron the hems of the curtain flat.
7. Insert the curtain rod and hang your new insulated curtains.
