Squirrels are active animals that frequent the trees and yards of homeowners throughout the United States. These innocent-looking animals can leave a wake of destruction with their sharp teeth and claws. Pepper
Pepper is an ideal squirrel repellent, as they are affected by the peppers capsaicin levels. When the squirrel comes in contact with the pepper, by either ingestion or skin contact, it causes it discomfort which deters it from frequenting that area or food source. Dried red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper found in grocery store spice aisles can be sprinkled around the area you don't want squirrels to enter or mixed with your bird food as birds are not affected by the pepper. Make a homemade blend by growing your own peppers and drying them in a food dehydrator, then grind them in a food processor. A spray can be made by adding fresh or dried peppers to boiling water, which releases the capsaicin into the water.
Homemade Spray
Homemade repellent spray contains chemical and smells that squirrels will stay away from. You can make these by combining household items such as disinfectant spray or vinegar and water. These have to be reapplied regularly as the effectiveness is diminished over time and by natural elements such as rain or snow. Liquid ammonia is an effective deterrent for outdoor areas due to its extremely strong and irritating smell. Use a sponge or cloth to hold the ammonia which will radiate its smell for a period of time, repelling any squirrels in the area.
Pets
You household pets are an ideal squirrel repellent as they are scared of cats and dogs. Allow your pets to freely roam the area of your yard that you do not want the squirrels. A dogs bark is usually enough to deter any squirrels to entering your area. They will often seek out areas around your house that do not have any animals.
