Luckily the University of North Carolina offers a residential program to promising high school students, while other more traditional boarding schools are renowned for their comprehensive art programs and extracurricular activities.
University of North Carolina School for the Arts
UNCSA offers a residential arts program to high school students showing promise as aspiring artists. The school offers preparation in dance, drama, music and visual arts. The program is known for its rigorous academic studies, while students may reside on UNCSA's campus or commute from home.
St. Mary's School
St. Mary's School in Raleigh is an independent, Episcopal, boarding and day school for girls in grades 9-12. St. Mary's School offers a comprehensive fine arts program in addition their rigorous academic program, advanced placement courses and athletic programs. The fine arts program consists of courses in music, dance, drama and the visual arts.
Durham School of the Arts
Durham School of the Arts is a public school and does not provide housing. However, it emphasizes the arts offering courses in music, dance, theater and the visual arts. DSA's goal is to instill a lifelong appreciation for the performing and visual arts in their students. The school is also equipped with two full-time art galleries, a 1,600 seat theater and a black box theater as venues for students.

Founded in 1900, The Christ School rests on 500 acres and offers a range of activities for boys in grades 9-12. The Episcopalian-affiliated school offers art programs in drama, studio art and film.

Asheville School and the American Hebrew Academy are traditional coed boarding schools. Accepting students in grades 9-12, Asheville School is recognized for their academic rigor and humanities program. Asheville also has three choirs and a fine arts society that students can participate in.
In Greensboro, American Hebrew Academy accepts Jewish students in grades 9 tp 12 to participate in their academically rigorous program with an emphasis on hands-on learning. The arts curriculum is extensive with courses in photography, studio art, theater and film.
