Cheesecloth is a type of fabric. It can be used for a variety of different things, but is traditionally used in the process of making cheese. The range of its uses depends on the thickness of its weave, and there are several variations available. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Make Up
Cheesecloth is made from woven cotton. The cotton strands interweave with each other to create a desired consistency for the fabric. There are at least seven different grades of cheesecloth, which are graded on the size of the holes in the fabric. The holes allow liquids to pass through, but contain solids within, thus making a suitable strainer for many things.
Cheese Making
Cheese-makers use cheesecloth in which to wrap their curds. If they want the juices to drain from the curds, they wrap them to ensure excess liquids come out but the essential moisture stays in. Curds may also be wrapped several times to make sure they don't dry out. When the whey of the curds is ready inside the cloth, the maker can then squeeze it and hang it to cure. The un-dyed cotton of the fabric also allows it to be used more than once.
Fashion
In the 1960s and 1970s cheesecloth was a very popular fashion choice. Designers used it to make shirts, shoes and dresses. There are still some styles available today that are made from cheesecloth. The cloth makes for a very light and airy summer style. However, while it is comfortable and allows the skin to breathe, it is difficult to iron and is not very strong. Even when made in layers, the cloth can tear easily.
Cooking
Cooks may use cheesecloth in many different ways. It can clarify stocks of bits of food particles to make clear broths that can be used in soups and sauces. In addition, the straining properties work well in the processing of thick yogurts and tofu. Some cooks may also use it to cure meat or strain fats. Tea and herbs can be held in liquids to add flavor without releasing the individual pieces of tea leaves and herbs. Because the cloth does not usually transfer flavors, it is generally reusable as long as it is cleaned first.
Other Uses
Cheesecloth has been used in the printmaking process. It can be used to wipe off gum arabic in the lithographic process, and can also be used to wipe excess ink away from printing surfaces.
There are several uses around the house for the cloth, as well. Some of these include bug screens, cleaning rags, strainers and as hanging cloth to dry out garden herbs. Additionally, it can be used to strengthen fabrics and make crafts.
