Housewife Costume Ideas

Housewife costumes allow you to be creative and entertaining.

It's difficult to find a costume that hasn't been overdone but also fits your personality. A housewife costume is just right, as it can be accessorized to fit any style. You can gear the costume toward the funny or seductive route. However, "Glamour" magazine warns to not get overly sexual with costumes made primarily of lingerie. Housewife costumes are inexpensive since most items can be found in your own closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Vintage Housewife

Vintage fashion is trendy again in modern times. One way to be a part of the trend is by wearing a vintage housewife costume. Luckily, you have many decades to gather inspirations for your costumes. A 1940s or '50s housewife would include a full skirt or dress, apron, a vintage hairstyle and heels. "Elle Girl" suggests turning it into a couple's ensemble with you as a Housewife and your beau as Mr. Clean. Another costume is an 1800s housewife. You can be a ranch housewife or a wealthy housewife. For the ranch wife, all you would need is a long, full dress with cowboy boots and your hair pinned into a bun. For the wealthy housewife, a long dress with petticoat, nice boots and a hat would work well.

TV Housewife

Some of the most memorable housewives come from television. Shows you watched as a kid or today could serve as costume ideas. Most people will recognize a cartoon housewife costume, because they've seen her wear it constantly on the show. Examples include Marge Simpson, Wilma Flintstone or Jane Jetson. If you prefer sitcoms or drama, you can try Peggy Bundy, one of the "Desperate Housewives," Clair Huxtable or Samantha from "Bewitched." Other popular choices are Lucy Ricardo and June Cleaver. For reality housewives, you can dress up like one of the women from "The Real Housewives" or Kate Gosselin.

Stressed Housewife

Have fun with your stressed housewife costume.

The stressed housewife is a fun idea that can use many of the clothes you already own. Sweatpants, flip flops, a robe and a torn shirt all work for the look. Or, if you prefer a dressier look, you could try a nice dress with a fake baby food stain. You can even have the spoon still be stuck to the stain. Hair should be messed up or in rollers and make up is optional. The more exhausted you look, the better. You could even carry around a baby doll with a diaper. Rolling the baby doll in a stroller would also work.

Spoiled Housewife

The spoiled housewife costumes also uses items you already have. Nice pants or skirts with a nice shirt plus sunglasses will start off the look. Fake nails, a cell phone, makeup and big hair will round out the look. An oversized hat or bag would also work. You could pretend to call your nanny to take care of your kids or bring a doll and keep handing it off to others. You could also carry a martini or wine glass around. It's important to play up the spoiled attitude with this costume. Walking tall and flipping your hair will help with the character.
