Forest Park
Forest Park is considered the largest, forested natural area within city limits in the United States. It covers more than 5,000 acres and includes biking, equestrian and hiking trails. One of the trails, called the Wildwood Trail, is part of the state's 40-mile loop system that connects various locations around Portland. The park is also home to animals and wildlife. According to the website Portland Online, there are more than 112 birds and 62 mammal species in the park, which is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

International Rose Test Garden
Operated by Portland Parks and Recreation, the International Rose Test Garden is the oldest official continuously operated public rose test garden in the United States. The garden is used as a testing area for new rose varieties. According to the International Rose Test Garden website, about 200 varieties are tested every year at the site. The roses are generally in bloom from mid-May to late June. Also, from June 2 to Sept. 19, there are tours led by trained volunteers. The garden is open to the public daily from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to help support the garden.

First Thursday Gallery Walk
On the first Thursday of every month, there is an art gallery walk in downtown Portland. It allows the public to preview art exhibitions that are on display at different Portland art galleries. People can walk from gallery to gallery to view all of the exhibits. Music and wine is another highlight of the event. The gallery walk generally runs from 6 to 9 p.m., although individual gallery hours may vary slightly.

Portland Saturday Market
More than 250 small businesses and individual artists from the Northwest gather every weekend at the Portland Saturday Market. The market has been operating since 1974, and is one of the largest continually operating outdoor arts and crafts market in the country, according to the Portland Saturday Market website. The market is located in Portland's historic old town. People can meet and talk with the local artists and see unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. There is also live music and food at the event. The weekend market hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
