Cooking Schools For Kids In Reading Pennsylvania

Children in Reading can learn cooking skills.

Cooking schools are designed to teach various cooking skills in culinary arts. A cooking school for kids has lessons for children that are age appropriate. The town of Reading in Pennsylvania has one children's cooking school in the town: the Young Chefs Academy. This is the only children's cooking school in or around Reading.

Age to Start in the School

The Young Chefs Academy takes students as young as three years old and starts teaching them cooking skills. The youngest age group, from ages three to five years old, learns cooking skills appropriate for their age group, along with nutrition, movement and cooking literature. The instructor and assistant also teach skills like shapes, numbers and colors to the children.

Older Students

The older students in the classes are split into two groups: junior chefs and senior chefs. The junior chef classes are designed for students from ages five or six up to ages 13 or 14. Students in this age group learn about cooking and creativity at age appropriate levels as well as kitchen safety. Senior chef classes are available for teens above the age of 14 who want more in-depth cooking instruction. At the senior level, students are expected to know the basics of safety and cooking from previous classes.

Birthday Parties

The Young Chefs Academy not only offers classes, it also has birthday party options for parents. The parents bring children for the party and children spend the party cooking, playing games related to cooking and listening to background music. Parents are given menu options which are age appropriate such as pizza, ice cream or pasta.

Camp

The Young Chefs Academy offers day camp options for children at various times throughout the year. Campers come for three hours a day for a specified number of days, ranging between two and five days depending on the specific camp, and learn about foods, textures and recipes. The camps follow themes like Summer Treats or The Great Kitchen Mystery to give variety for repeat campers.
