London offers diverse study choices for design study.


Design schools, also known as art schools, offer programs ranging from fashion to photography to textile design. The United Kingdom is well known for its many highly acclaimed design schools. They are scattered throughout the entire country, but a large portion are concentrated in the city of London.


Royal College of Art


The Royal College of Art, located in London, is the world's only postgraduate school for design. The college was founded in 1967 to "advance learning, knowledge and professional competence particularly in the field of fine arts..." Over 20 disciplines are offered including fashion design, vehicle design, animation, printmaking and the history of design. Notable alumni include Sir James Dyson, David Hockney, Christopher Bailey, Alison Jackson, Suzie Templeton and Sir Ridley Scott. Admission requirements include an undergraduate degree and a portfolio. Special admissions for those that have not received an undergraduate degree are sometimes granted.

Chelsea College of Art & Design


Since 2004, the Chelsea College of Art & Design has been a part of the University of the Arts London. The first Chelsea College of Art opened in 1895 and employed London's most distinguished artists to serve as teachers. The college currently has 17 areas of study, including textile design, graphic design, interior design, model making and film and video. In 2009, Chelsea and two of the other specialty colleges at the University of the Arts London launched a graduate school. The requirements include a high school diploma and a portfolio.

Norwich University College of the Arts


In August 2008, the Norwich School of Art and Design changed its name to the Norwich University College of the Arts because it was granted the power to award degrees up to the Masters level. This step in the university's history added to their mission "to be a centre of excellence in the region which provides opportunities for innovation in teaching and learning and through research develops knowledge and understanding of art, design and visual culture." Programs at Norwich include games art and design, fashion, textiles, surface design and photography. Applicants should have a high school diploma and portfolio before applying.
