Cosmetic companies are beginning to develop more organic and natural cosmetics.
The Beauty Tips Hub website reports that the cosmetic industry is starting to change its focus toward creating products that contain organic and natural ingredients in response to customer's concerns with health and wellness. However, an article on naturepurity.com, titled "Organic or Not?," wants consumers to also be aware that there are no Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards for the labeling of cosmetics in the U.S. Does this Spark an idea?
Natural Ingredients
The Health Food Emporium website lists a number of natural ingredients, what they are, and the ingredients uses. These include alfalfa extract, which is a natural exfoliate, allspice, which is a spice used in cooking made from the ground dried berries of a West Indies evergreen tree, aloe and aloe vera, which are widely used as healing agents and sunburn treatments, and an apple-peel extract, which in addition to having a pleasing scent, is a natural pH adjuster and antioxidant.
Organic Ingredients
The Beauty Tips Hub website lists beeswax as an organic ingredient used in moisturizers to improve skin texture. Beeswax comes from bee hives and is a common ingredient in skin-care products. Castor oil is a powerful organic ingredient that is used as both a skin and hair treatment, especially if a person suffers from acne. Turmeric, another spice that is used in cooking, is also popular for its healing qualities. Turmeric is found in products that soothe acne and in sunscreens.
The Validity of Organic Cosmetics
Companies making personal-care products often mislead consumers by wrapping their products in attractive packaging printed with false claims and percentages. The Department of Agriculture (USDA) is working on a program for organic certification of cosmetic products. The organic or natural components are usually floral waters or essential oils. Avoid cosmetics containing cocamide-DEA, PEG or parabens and research a product before purchasing it to make sure the ingredients are truly natural or organic.
