Cosmetic Mineral Recipe

Makeup

The key ingredient of mineral makeup is mica, which is a term that refers to a group of natural minerals. Mica is purchased in powdered form and comes in a wide variety of colors. Making your own mineral makeup from mica and other ingredients can be a cost effective alternative to buying pricey mineral makeup kits. Does this Spark an idea?

Supplies and Ingredients

Gather supplies such as kabuki brushes for applying the makeup, and containers that can hold the powders and creams. Many craft shops carry makeup applicators and containers, but you can also look for supply stores that cater specifically to people who make mineral cosmetics. Purchase various colors of mica powder, and experiment with different textures of mica. It comes in fine powder and glitter. Vitamin E oil and white beeswax are also necessary for making mineral lipsticks and more. You can use your home microwave to make mineral lipsticks and cosmetic creams that contain beeswax and oils. This is because beeswax has a low melting point.

Lipstick

In a small glass bowl mix the following ingredients: one tablespoon of crimson mica, one sixteenth of a teaspoon of royal blue mica and one teaspoon of crimson glittered mica. Use a disposable plastic fork to thoroughly cut and mix the colored mica powders together. Pour the mix of powders from the bowl into a measuring cup, and set it aside. Pour about a half a cup of white beeswax pellets into the glass bowl and add about a teaspoon of vitamin E oil. Mix the oil through the pellets. Microwave the bowl just long enough for the beeswax to melt, but not bubble, which takes from one to three minutes. Use the plastic fork to slowly and thoroughly mix the melted beeswax as you add the colored mica one spoonfullat a time. Stop adding the mica when the wax has gotten too stiff and cool to mix. Microwave for an additional forty seconds and mix in the rest of the pigmented minerals. Spoon the mixture into a lipstick container, and refrigerate for an hour before use.

Eyeshadow

Eyeshadow is probably easier to make than many of the other mineral cosmetics. In a small glass bowl, combine a tablespoon of hunter green mica powder with a teaspoon of gold glittered mica powder. Mix the contents of the bowl with a plastic fork until it is thoroughly incorporated. Add about a sixteenth of a teaspoon of pearl mica to give the eyeshadow a touch of shimmer. Do not cut the pearl mica into the powder; simply drop it into the bowl and make swirls with the handle of the fork into the mica powder. Pour it into an eyeshadow container and use a kabuki brush to apply to your eyelids.
