Alternative Schools In Indianapolis

Alternative education programs encourage students having problems in school to learn.

Alternative education programs help students who are having trouble, socially or academically, at regular high school or middle schools. The Indianapolis public school system has a little over a dozen options for students looking into alternative education programs. Some program students go to a completely different school while some programs operate within the student's original school.

New Horizons

New Horizons is an alternative education high school located in Indianapolis. The program is for students from 7th to 12th grade "who have a documented history of disruptive behavior and significant academic failure in their home schools," according to Indianapolis' public school system website. The school uses non-traditional learning exercises, flexible schedules and preventative interventions to not only help students learn but also to improve their quality of life. The school also promotes community involvement in their students in hopes of providing students with off-site educational experiences.

Pacers High School

Pacers High School is located in Lafayette Square in Indianapolis and provides students with families the opportunity to graduate. The program accepts any students studying within one of the high schools in the Pike Township area. The alternative education program works with students who do not have a lot of time to study because of family or children and provide them the opportunity to receive their education. Pacers Academy High School, another alternative education program for Pike Township students, is similar to the Pacers High School program. Instead of focusing on students with families, it gives students who have dropped out or are at risk of dropping out an accelerated program to keep the students in school.

PACTS

PACTS is an acronym for Preparatory, Academic, Career and Technology School. The program takes students who are at risk of dropping out of high school and gives them a chance to graduate with a career or vocational focus. Students enrolled in the program are at least 16 years old and have failed a grade one or more times. Students take vocational classes at the Career and Technology Center and learn work ethics as well as entry-level career skills. The program focuses on using strategies to implement problem-solving skills, self-motivation skills and team skills.

Accelerated Learning/Respect

This alternative education program takes place within public schools to protect 7th and 8th grade students from expulsion. Students in these grades have been expelled or are at risk of being expelled from the learning system and can continue to get an education. The program is individualized to each student and is mainly a computerized curriculum. While in the program, students must behave properly or they will be expelled and taken off the program. The program hopes to transition all of the students back into their home school.
