Compost Rabbit Waste

Rabbit waste is higher in nutrients than that of any other animal.

Rabbit waste added to a compost pile adds nutrients to the compost. Rabbit waste contains the highest amount of nitrogen found in any animal waste, according to Three Little Ladies Rabbitry. The droppings also contain phosphorus, which PlanTea asserts is is essential for flowers and fruit-bearing trees. You can place a worm bin below your rabbit's cage, and the dropping will fall directly into the compost. You will only be responsible for worm bin maintenance and cleaning off the waste from the wire cage that did not fall into the compost bin. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place the rabbit hutch on the stand. The stand should hold the cage 3 feet off the ground.

2. Drill five holes into the bottom of the tote using the 5/8 drill bit. The holes should be spread evenly around the bottom of the tote. Drill an additional two holes on each of the four sides of the tote.

3. Place the tote in the catch pan.

4. Add 4 inches of shredded black-and-white newspaper to the bottom of the tote. Do not use newspaper that contains colored ink.

5. Slide the tote and catch pan below the rabbit hutch. Place your rabbit or rabbits in the hutch. Wait until you have about 2 inches of waste on top of the paper.

6. Mix the rabbit waste and newspaper together using a compost poker. Add water until the mixture is wet. Let the mixture sit overnight.

7. Add more water and mix the compost the next day. Continue to do this for two to three days.

8. Place your hand into the bedding after three days. If the compost feels hot, keep mixing and adding water each day until the compost is no longer giving off heat.

9. Add the red worms once the compost is cool.

10. Remove any urine areas from the compost bin daily. The high-ammonia level in urine is not good for the worms.

11. Add 1/2 inch of soil and mix the compost with the compost poker once a month. This will keep the compost from becoming packed.
