Appetizers that are served on wood scraps, crackers that are larger than most plates and tomato lollipops are just a few examples of what awaits you and your guests at some of Dallas' coolest restaurants. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Tillman's Roadhouse

If you seek a restaurant with an interior design unlike any other restaurant, visit Tillman's Roadhouse. With dark, earthy colors as a backdrop, the interior is infused with pops of color like an extra-long turquoise, suede sofa and bright orange acrylic art attached to a wall made of disks that are cut from tree bark. A mixture of rustic, eclectic, modern and traditional decor, Tillman's Roadhouse serves unusual dishes such as truffle popcorn and warm peanuts, venison frito pie, goat cheese tater tots and a dessert that consists of a stack of peanut butter cookies, chocolate chip cookies and ice cream that is covered in a mound of chocolate, known as the peanut butter and chocolate chip cookie tower. Appetizers are served atop a scrap piece of wood.

Cowboy Chow

Located on Commerce Street in Dallas, the Cowboy Chow restaurant features a number of beef dishes that are braised in beer, tequila, jalapeno juice, red wine, bourbon and a variety of other non-alcoholic liquids. Order the Navajo bread and you will receive what looks like a giant cracker that is larger than most people's head. The Navajo bread is presented standing in the upright position atop a stained scrap piece of wood. With a rustic decor, cowboy boots are used in a variety of ways to accent the decor. For an appetizer that you are not likely to see at any other restaurant, order the fried green tomato lollipops.

Local

Located in the artsy area of Deep Ellum on Elm Street in Dallas in the former Boyd Motel, the Local is a standout because of its modern furniture and art pieces. The original hotel entrance remains, which is a unique architectural detail. Each guest is welcomed with a small bowl of warm spiced nuts and a petite soup amuse. The owner, Tracy Miller, is also the chef. With a modern decor, Local has a warm and inviting ambience.
