Implement A Simple Family Food Storage Plan In Case Of Crisis

Purchase and store food items for future use in case of crisis.


Preserving food has always served as a hedge against some future time when food is not as readily available. Grocery stores offer canned, frozen, dried and freeze-dried foods that have long shelf lives. People with gardens, or access to them, preserve foods for later use. In addition to the natural seasons of food production, it's possible for food to become scarce when a natural disaster strikes, with roads and other means of delivery closed for indefinite periods of time. If you are concerned about the availability of food at some future time, create a food storage plan that will see you and your family through a crisis. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Plan ahead by creating menus. The most efficient way to use your storage dollar is to cut as much waste as possible. Know exactly what foods you will need to buy to make the meals on your menus.


2. Make detailed lists of the items you will need to buy. If your menus call for the use of instant mashed potatoes twice in a month's time, don't purchase a jumbo box. Only buy what you need.


3. Decide where you will store your food. A typical pantry will not suffice for long-term storage, nor will the freezer in your refrigerator. Scout out areas of your home such as extra bedrooms, cellars and attics for additional freezer space or for shelving. Unused dresser drawers, trunks, under-the-stairs nooks and garages are also possibilities, but take into account weather conditions such as humidity, heat and freezing temperatures when considering any location.


4. Buy in bulk where possible. Warehouse discount clubs are a good place to find industrial-sized packages of various food items. Plan to repackage bulk items into meal-sized portions if if doing so will not interfere with the expiration dates. For example, buy rice in a large 10-pound bag, then portion it by one-cup measures into zippered plastic storage bags or in bags on a roll with twist ties. Do the same for other dried foods such as pasta or instant mashed potatoes.


5. Watch for sales and use coupons to make the most of your current spending allowance for foods. Many stores offer tremendous savings on a featured item to lure shoppers into their stores. Be diligent in sticking to your list so that your savings are not canceled out by rash purchases elsewhere in the store.


6. Organize your storage. Some people store like items together. Pastas, rice and dried potatoes are stored in one place together. Canned vegetables are put in one single place and boxed mixes in another. Alternatively, some people store a week's or month's worth of specific meals together. In this case, repackaging of bulk items comes in handy.


7. Label all foods carefully. Know exactly when the food must be consumed or discarded. Some foods, such as rice and pinto beans, have extremely long shelf lives. Others go bad more quickly.


8. Rotate your foods so that the newest purchases go to the back of the line. Once you have the quantity of foods you need, use your normal food budget to buy new items for storage while using the older items already in storage for your daily, non-crisis cooking.


9. Can, freeze or dehydrate foods bought or grown in season. Learn to use a pressure canner and a food dehydrator. Preserve fresh fruits, vegetables and meats, always labeling carefully.

Metaphysical Properties Of Essential Oils

Since ancient times, people have cultivated and harvested herbs and other plants to help in their lives whether it was for cooking, cleaning or feeling better. Not only do botanicals have physical properties such as healing wounds, but metaphysical properties as well. "Metaphysical" by general definition is referring to ideas outside of our normal senses, with trying to explain a reality that exists beyond us.


Essential oils, which are distilled from botanicals, are one way that people use to reach past the material world and let the properties of whichever oil they are using affect them.


Healing


Healing the body and mind is one of the major metaphysical areas for using essential oils. There are too many healing oils and blends to list here, but some of the more popular ones are carnation, rosemary, gardenia, sandalwood and eucalyptus. To make a healing blend of essential oils, try mixing four drops of rosemary, one drop of sandalwood and two drops of juniper.


Warding and Protecting


People who need to protect themselves from dangers should find essential oils from herbs known for their properties to ward. Cedar is a great choice, and not only for hope chests, to keep heirlooms and keepsakes safe. Cedar resonates with the Sun and Fire, both excellent for chasing away bad things. Fennel is another herb that is well known for deflecting negativity. Other choices may include cinnamon, pine, rose geranium and clove.


Stimulating and Strengthening


Mint is a great choice for stimulating oneself. Peppermint can be used even in conferences and meetings for stimulating the mind and helping to focus. Ginseng is another choice for strength, as it too relates to Fire. Wormwood aids in beating back opposition by strengthening your determination.


Mental and Emotional Clarity


To help you with clear thinking mentally and emotionally, add some orange peel or orange blossom essential oil to your routine. Cherry oils are great for brightening up your day. Essential oils and blends that use herbs related to the Water element are great for helping with emotions. Include jasmine, rose and even vanilla here to help with balance in your mind.


Prosperity


Most people are concerned with prosperity in their life such as material wealth, good luck or a happy home. Essential oils to help these areas may include honeysuckle, patchouli, sage, bergamot, allspice and pine. Many of these herbs are related to Earth, which is the source for all types of prosperity.


Love


Everyone wants love in their life. Love can come from people or pets. Using the metaphysical properties of essential oils, to bring love into your life consider rose, lotus, lavender and jasmine.


Considerations


Something to keep in mind is that many herbs have multiple metaphysical uses. For example, allspice is used to attract prosperity and luck, but it is also used for healing. It is important to keep safety in mind when using essential oils and blends, as some scents can trigger allergies or seizures in people with underlying conditions. Placing them on the skin without diluting them first can cause a rash or other reaction. Be aware of what you are buying. Many essential oils sold in chain stores are 5 percent to 10 percent oil, with the rest being synthetic ingredients. Pure essential oils are 100 percent, and while they cost more, it takes less to achieve the effect you are after.

Pre Sprout Corn Seed

Planting corn in spring is a little bit of a gamble because corn seed is prone to rotting during cool, wet weather. Luckily, you can beat the odds by pre-sprouting your corn seed inside. Sprouted seeds handle variable weather much better than dry seed and typically send up shoots within a few days of planting outdoors. Pre-sprouting is a super simple process--and definitely the best way to limit your losses due to rot and improve your corn yields. Here's what you need to do. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions


1. Pour a packet of corn seed into a shallow dish. Sort through the seeds and remove any that are broken or cracked.


2. Layer two paper towels on top of each other and get them wet. Spread the sorted corn seed out on half of the wet paper towel. Then fold the other half of the towel over the top of the seeds. The seeds should now be sandwiched between a double layer of paper towels.


3. Slide the paper towel into a resealable plastic bag and then seal the bag three-fourths of the way shut. Place the bag in a warm, dark place. Check on the seeds daily, making sure that the towel stays moist.


4. Remove the seeds from the towel as soon as you see roots beginning to emerge (usually 2 to 4 days). Immediately plant the sprouted seeds one inch deep, taking special care not to break their delicate, fleshy roots. When planting, space the seeds 4 or 5 inches apart in rows 24 inches apart. When the corn reaches 4 inches tall, thin the seedlings out to 10 inches apart.

Workplace Safety In Chicken Processing Plants

Processing chickens can be hazardous to one's health.


When you reach into that bucket of chicken and pull out a drumstick, you probably don't think about its long journey from egg to your hand. The poultry industry, like any industry, has certain work hazards involved. These fall under two general categories: raising and delivering the chickens, and slaughtering and packaging them.


Respiratory Problems


Raising chickens for mass consumption is an industry. We raise more than 8 billion chickens in the U.S. every year. These chickens produce an enormous amount of feathers and waste that pose health risks to poultry farm workers. The feathers and down can cause allergy and breathing problems for workers. Toxins, ammonia and harmful bacteria are found in the air and in the dust of dried chicken manure. To avoid respiratory problems, workers should wear air-purifying respirators. If wearing protective eyewear, make sure that it does not interfere with your respirator fitting flush against your skin.


Avian Flu


Although there have been no cases in the U.S., it is possible to catch avian flu from chickens. The Centers for Disease Control recommend that poultry works have plans to avoid flu outbreaks and to deal with outbreaks that occur.


To prevent outbreaks, workers need to know the signs of infection in birds and in humans. Any sick birds should immediately be removed from the flock. Workers might want to get a flu shot.


In the event of an avian flu outbreak, workers should wear personal protective equipment (PPE), such as aprons, boots, head protection, eye protection, a respirator and gloves. Always wash your hands and shower before going home for the day, leaving you work clothes and equipment at work. Take part in any health monitoring plans. The employer must provide these plans and any special safety equipment at no cost to the workers.


Killing the Chickens


This stage poses safety hazards for workers. Workers who operate the automatic dumper system, which empties the birds out of their transport cages and onto a conveyor belt, are exposed to two types of injuries. Controls for the machinery may be located in such a way that they cause arm, shoulder or back stress. This can be remedied by relocating the controls or wearing gloves to protect the hands. The other danger is that of working around large machines with moving parts. The more active a worker is around these machines, the greater the chance that he could slip and fall onto or into the machinery. To prevent this, there should be guard rails around any moving parts, and floors should be clean and dry to prevent slipping.


The kill room attendant uses a knife to kill any birds missed by the automated killing machine. In addition to possible repetitive stress injuries from using the knife, the killing room attendant is exposed to blood from the chickens, which can spread disease if it gets into the worker's eyes or on his face. He also stands in 2 to 3 inches of blood while working, so there is a possibility of slipping and falling. To avoid injuries here, workers should wear PPE, including rubber boots with good soles; rooms should have proper drainage systems to remove blood quickly; and workers should use a sharp knife to reduce repetitive stress.


Processing the Chickens


Once the birds have been killed and the feathers removed, the internal organs must be removed. This includes hanging the birds on the conveyor line, cutting open the chickens, removing their organs, and inspecting hearts and livers for signs of disease. All of these jobs require standing in the same place for long periods of time, stretching or reaching motions, and repetitive actions. Some of these workers, especially those who use knives or scissors, are subject to carpal tunnel syndrome caused by the stress of repeatedly performing the same task. To alleviate the fatigue and muscle strain of standing, workers should be rotated to positions where they are doing different jobs. Providing stools, chairs or footrests allows workers to change their positions. To avoid repetitive stress injuries, workers should use sharp instruments and wear properly fitted gloves.


Packaging


Once the birds have been gutted, they are packaged as whole chickens, parts, or boneless parts. This again involves repetitive motion using a knife. To avoid repetitive stress injuries, such as tendinitis or carpal tunnel syndrome, workers should be rotated to duties that do not use the same muscles or motions. Some processors use electric saws to cut up the chickens. There is a risk of cuts and lacerations from the saw. To help reduce the risk of injury, workers should wear cut-proof mesh gloves and keep their hands on the sides of the blade when feeding the chicken through the saw.

Owing and operating a bakery that offers a variety of sweet treats that sets your products apart from all others can easily cause you to be the pride of your community. Opening a bakery can be stressful at times, but if done right, the rewards will outweigh the stress. Instructions


1. Prepare. When starting any business, you will probably need to talk to the bank about making a small business loan, unless you have a private source of funds. Starting a bakery is not going to be cheap. You will need to have the funds to rent or buy a location, renovate the location to the specifics recommended by your county or state food and health inspector and you will also need funds to purchase your cooking and baking supplies.


2. Choose a location. When looking for the perfect bakery spot, remember, the saying, "location, location, location." The three top choices of convenience for your future customers would be either at a busy shopping center or intersection, near a large workplace, or in the view of a busy gas station. Why a gas station? When travelers are passing through your area, they will tend to stop at a large gas station and convenience store. They will see your bakery and say "why buy a donut at this gas station when we could get something delicious at that bakery."


3. Acquire licenses and permits. You will need a number of permits and licenses before you are able to serve food to the public. Contact your local courthouse to find out what paperwork you will need in order to start a small business. You will also have to contact your local health inspector to inquire about specific restaurant inspections and requirements. If you are planning to provide tables and chairs for your customers, you will need to contact the fire marshal to find out how many people can safely be in your building at one time. You should hang all of these licenses and permits on the wall behind the cash register.


4. Offer outstanding products. The key to having a bakery that will set you apart from all others will be your products. Have a "lure" for your customers to be drawn to you. A few ideas are to offer a "sugar free" selection, a "low fat" selection" or even a "gluten free" bread selection. Learn to make fruit pies that will have everyone talking for miles around. Remember that the success of your bakery will depend on your products.


5. Take a cue. Take a cue from the popular donut shops that light up a "hot" sign when the donuts come out of the oven. Customers line up at the door as soon as they see the "hot" sign. You should have the same method of attraction with your products either early in the morning, late in the evening or at both times.


6. Satisfy your customers. The heart of your bakery will be your early morning traffic. Offer a few tables inside your store to accommodate early morning coffee groups. While people are visiting with one another, offer free samples of a new recipe that you are trying. Get the honest opinions from your customers, they will in turn, come back for more.


7. Support your community. Offer a catering service to company meetings, special events and ball team celebrations. For example, if the local high school football team wins a big game, you will be the hit of the celebration if you volunteer to bake a cake for them and decorate it like a football.


8. Schedule appointments for special occasions. When a future bride comes to you wanting a wedding cake or when you are asked to bake a cake and a few treats for a party, schedule an appointment to meet with your client so you are able to sit down with them to find out the details of what they want. Always remember to be personal with your customers, trying to discuss details across the counter at a busy time of day is not personal.

4. Take advantage of the parks, gardens and numerous outdoor spaces. The Parisians enjoy their city's free parks and you should do the same. Appreciate the sculpture garden outside the Louvre or watch the boats float on the pond at the Jardin des Tuileries. Take with you a baguette and a bottle of wine and relax on a bench at one of the many fountains. Walk and take in the wondrous exteriors of the buildings of Paris and its structures without spending a dime. Between the Champs Elysees, the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower are tiny streets and charming neighborhoods. Walk through the Notre Dame Cathedral for free, as only the tower and crypt require a fee. Use the metro system, even if you will be in Paris for only a few days. The metro will put you within a few blocks of just about anywhere in the city.


5. Dress simply, but conservatively. Parisians tend to not to run around in shorts and sneakers. Bring along a raincoat, since it does rain quite often. Learn a few words in French although almost everyone speaks English. However, the French consider it rude to walk in a store or establishment without saying "bon jour." A few words can take you a long way in establishing true contact and before you know it, you will be Parisian too.

Buckwheat Crafts

Buckwheat is a filler commonly used in pillow crafts.


Buckwheat is a biodegradable, natural product which you can use as a substitute for rice or beans as a filler for pillow crafts. Buckwheat filling typically comes as the hard outer shell of the buckwheat kernel, which is called the hull, or the inner seed, which is called the groat. Buckwheat filling is readily available at major retailers, health food stores and online vendors. Buckwheat pillow craft patterns can easily be modified to create standard, neck and eye pillows as well as hand warmers.


Characteristics of Buckwheat


Buckwheat pillow craft designs can be adjusted to make standard, neck and eye pillows.


Buckwheat hulls are ideal for pillow crafts because they are lightweight, virtually dust-free and durable. Buckwheat crafts cannot be washed in water, but you can place them in the sun a few hours each month to keep them fresh. Pillows filled with buckwheat hulls or groat form to the shape of the sleeper's neck and head to provide support. Buckwheat pillow crafts containing buckwheat groat hold heat and may be microwaved for approximately one minute for extra thermal comfort. Buckwheat hulls are flammable and should never be heated.


Herbal Pillow with Buckwheat


Buckwheat-filled pillows of all sizes are simple to make. Once you decide the size of the pillow, select a cotton fabric and cut it into two equal pieces slightly larger than the desired size of the pillow. Place the two patterned sides together and sew three sides closed. Turn the fabric inside-out and fill the pillow with two parts buckwheat and one part dried herbs of your choice. Sew the remaining open side closed and enjoy.


Buckwheat Neck Pillows


On heavy paper, draw the size of the desired neck pillow in a C-shape. For toddlers, a 10 1/2-by-15-inch pattern works well. The size and width can be adjusted for larger children and adults. Cut out two equal pieces using the C-shaped pattern and place the fabric with the patterned sides together. Sew around the C-shaped edges and leave a hole large enough through which the fabric can be turned right-side out. Turn the material right-side out, fill the pillow with buckwheat and sew the remaining opening shut. Consider using fleece for ultimate comfort.


Buckwheat Eye Pillows


To create a 4-by-10-inch eye pillow, select an 8-by-10-inch piece of lightweight fabric. Fold the fabric in half along the longer side with the patterned sides facing each other. Sew one of the short and one of the long sides shut and turn the pillow inside out. Fill the pillow with buckwheat, fold the remaining fabric edge in and sew it shut. Use this eye pillow for relaxation and sleeping.


Buckwheat Hand-Warmers


Cut two fabric squares to fit the size of the palm of your glove. Place the patterned sides of the material together and sew three of the edges shut. Turn the pillow right-side out and divide it into three sections with a washable fabric marker. Sew the pieces together along the two lines drawn. Insert a funnel into each section and fill with buckwheat groat. Sew the remaining edge closed and insert the pillow into the palm of your glove. Repeat this process for the other glove. When the weather gets chilly, microwave the pillows for one minute or less and insert them into your gloves for portable warmth.

Problems Exporting Fresh Produce

Fresh produce must be packaged and exported correctly to ensure freshness.


Fresh produce such as fresh fish, fresh fruit and vegetables are sought after by many households across the world. Unfortunately, some fresh produce only originates from certain parts of the world and must be transported across thousands of miles. With transportation comes long periods of the fresh produce being packaged and in transit. And, with that, comes problems in quality and freshness of the produce. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Slow Transport


One of the main problems of exporting fresh produce is the journey time from picking and packaging to arrival at its destination. Slow transportation is common. For example; FreshPlaza studied Indonesia's exportation rates, and found that slow transport links from picking to delivery was the reason for food rotting and becoming inedible. If you export fresh food, no matter where you are in the world, ensure you have good and quick transportation links, meaning your produce reaches its destination via the fastest possible route.


Poor Packaging


Poor and inadequate packaging is also a huge problem when exporting fresh produce. Different produce needs different packaging to ensure its longevity. For example; exported meat is kept most fresh when air-tight and flat-packed. This ensures the meat is kept in its original, fresh state and feels and tastes fresh on its arrival to the destination. Fresh vegetables, on the other hand, need air and water to ensure freshness. Research what type of packaging works best for the produce you export before you send it. This ensures good quality on arrival.


Poor Storage Facilities


Depending on what you export, ensure storage facilities are suitable for the produce. Fresh fish and meat need to be kept cold. Your van or truck should have suitable storage facilities. Buy specialist equipment and install it into your van or truck; otherwise buy a specialist refrigerator van. Poor Produce Inspection


Produce inspection, or checking that produce is clean, healthy and free from insects needs to be an essential part of exporting fresh produce. If this simple task is not carried out, it could cause problems when the produce arrives at the final destination. For example; if fresh vegetables or fruit were in transit, insects had enough time to eat parts of your produce. This does not look professional when delivered, and you may lose business in the future. Ensue all your produce is clean, not rotten, free of insects and generally looking healthy.

Make Ovenblackened Tilapia

Fish is an excellent dietary source of healthy fats.


Blackened tilapia is a delicious and healthy meal. An 8-ounce serving of plain tilapia has 288 calories, 56 grams of protein and no carbohydrates. Due to the highly versatile flavor of the resulting dish, serving the fish can vary widely according to personal preferences. Boneless fillets can be incorporated into fish tacos or served on sandwiches. Dieters can consider serving the tilapia with a steamed green vegetable or lightly-dressed salad for a low-calorie, low-carbohydrate meal. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Combine all dry spices in the large plastic bag, shaking briskly until the mixture is fully combined.


2. Pour the oil onto the baking sheet. Individually coat the tilapia fillets with the blackening spice mixture by gently shaking them in the plastic bag. Place the coated fillets into the baking pan.


3. Cover the baking pan with foil and place into the preheated oven. Bake the tilapia fillets for 20 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven.


4. Move the upper oven rack to the top setting. Adjust the heat settings in the oven to broil. Remove the foil from the baking pan and replace the tilapia in the oven.


5. Broil the tilapia fillets for 5 minutes, with the oven door slightly ajar to aid in air circulation. Remove the tilapia from the oven and immediately squeeze approximately 1 teaspoon of lemon juice over each fillet.

Ethical Impacts Of Gmo

Genetically modified foods are created by artificially inserting bacteria, insect or animal genes into the DNA of food crops. Unresolved ethical issues surround the developing science and business of these genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Advocates of the process claim that GMO foods can reduce world hunger and malnutrition. Critics argue that GMO products primarily satisfy the profit motives of the large corporations who own the GMO patents.


Owning Food


GMO products are usually patented and owned by a corporation. These ownership rights extend to the next generation of seeds produced by the plants. This means farmers who use a GMO crop cannot save and store their seeds for future sowing; the seeds are owned by the corporation and must be purchased again every year. GMO seeds may also blow in the wind onto neighboring fields, where they may grow on an unsuspecting farmer's land. This will not only contaminate the farmer's natural crop with a GMO crop he did not wish to plant, but it may also force him to defend himself in an expensive patent-infringement lawsuit. Monsanto, the leading producer of GMO crops, had filed 90 such lawsuits as of 2005, according to The Center for Food Safety.


Controlling Nature


Genetically modified crops are created by adding the genes of one species to the genes of another. This is done to create a plant with traits such as herbicide-resistance or pest-resistance. It is not the same as the age-old agricultural tradition of selecting and naturally breeding plants or animals of the same or similar species in order to encourage certain traits noted in the "parent" species. The GMO "flavor-saver tomato," for example, was created by injecting fish (flounder) genes into the DNA of a tomato. Some religious people may not be morally comfortable with this level of genetic manipulation or with the idea of "playing God."


Animal Welfare


Milk made from cows treated with the artificial growth hormone rBGH or rBST is a genetically modified food. These growth hormones increase a cow's milk production, an alteration which causes its udders to swell to an abnormally large size. This increased lactation also increases metabolic stress, nutritional deficiency and risk of udder infection in the cow, according to the Animal Welfare Institute. Many people who buy rBGH-free milk do so to protest what they believe is the unethical treatment of dairy cows.


World Hunger


Advocates of GMO crops claim the technology holds great promise for alleviating world hunger. They argue that genetically engineered crops will increase food yields, reduce food prices and ensure enough food is available. Crops can also be modified for improved nutritional value. This can potentially help poor countries target particular nutritional deficiencies. Critics such as Greenpeace point out that world hunger is not due to an insufficient supply of food, but to other economic and empowerment factors, factors that will not be remedied if seeds and crops can be patented and owned by large, foreign corporations.

Start with the basics of cooking and you will be entertaining guests in no time.


The key to great cooking is learning the basics. Experienced chefs with extensive skills and knowledge all began their careers with the basics. Tools


It is possible to cook food with no more than a stick and fire. Most cooks, however, will find great success using a wider variety of tools. Your first cooking lesson is to equip your kitchen with the basic tools of the trade. Include at least two pots, a pan, several knives, stirring spoons, and measuring cups and spoons in your collection. There is a kitchen tool for every cooking action imaginable, but inexperienced cooks need only the simplest tools. Herbs and spices are also kitchen tools. In addition to purchasing the fresh spices required in specific recipes, keep a selection of dry spices on hand, such as oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, thyme and cumin.


Cooking Methods


Your next lesson involves cooking methods. The simplest and most common of the methods are grilling, boiling, baking and steaming. Some cooks include frying in this category, but frying is not as healthy as the other methods and is not as common as it used to be. Grilling cooks food with intense heat from above or below. Boiling heats liquid to the point of evaporation and cooks the liquid or the food in the liquid. Baking is a prolonged method of dry cooking with convection heat. Steaming uses the hot vaporized water from boiling to cook food indirectly. More advanced methods of cooking include poaching, braising, broiling and saut ing.

People learn to cook from recipes. Recipes guide cooking step by step, creating a path for cooks that leads them from a collection of ingredients to an edible meal. Directions make cooking easier but are not always foolproof. Your personal taste might differ from the recipe, or you might need to adjust for an older oven, the altitude of your location or a missing ingredient. Inexperienced cooks rely on recipes but learn to focus on taste. Sample your dish as you prepare it, so you can make adjustments while it is still cooking.

Your final lesson is on ingredients. Experienced cooks understand that high-quality ingredients are the key to a delicious dish. Ant Killer For Yards

Ants in a yard make lawn maintenance more difficult.


In general, ants do not create problems in a yard unless their nests create unevenness that makes mowing difficult or creates an unsightly appearance. Ants are also able to become a problem for outdoor entertaining or children playing in the yard as some ants inflict painful stings. Finding an effective ant killer to eliminate ants from a yard is sometimes necessary. Does this Spark an idea?


Types of Yard Ants


Different types of ants are found on residential properties. Little black ants, pavement ants, larger yellow ants, cornfield ants and fire ants are just a few of the likely culprits found inhabiting a yard. Ants are social insects, so if only one or two are found, it's likely there are many more hidden below ground or in nearby woodpiles. To eliminate the colony, choose ant killers that not only work on contact but are able to be carried back to the nest.


Organic Ant Killers


Try non-chemical methods for eliminating ants in yards before resorting to more harmful chemicals that affect beneficial insects, wildlife and the environment. For a large nest, boil a few pots of water and pour it directly onto the mounds. This kills some ants and persuades others to move the nest elsewhere. Boric acid sprinkled around nests also is effective. Boric acid acts as a stomach poison in ants. It also damages the waxy coating on their bodies, which dries them out and kills them. Make an organic bait that ants carry back to the nest by mixing 1 cup of water, ½ cup sugar and 1 1/2 tsp. of boric acid. Saturate a cotton ball and place into a small jar. Punch a few holes in the lid and place near ant nests. They feed on the sugary bait and carry the boric acid poison back to their nests to kill the colony, according to North Dakota State University horticulturalist Ron Smith.


Chemical Ant Killers


For stubborn ant problems in a yard, try a chemical insecticide like carbaryl granules, diazinon or chlorpyrifos, according to University of Montana pest management specialist Sherry Lajeunesse. Remember that chemical insecticides kill beneficial insects as well. They also leach into groundwater and nearby waterways. Always use chemical pesticides according to label directions. Chemical insecticides are applied around, not on, the mounds.


Fire Ant


Fire ant infestations are a particular problem in lawns because of the aggressive nature of this type of ant. Fire ants attack any threat to their nest, swarming and stinging the intruder. Children and pets inadvertently disturb nests and suffer painful stings. A two-step approach is the best method to control fire ant mounds in a yard, first drenching the mound with pesticide, and then applying baits to kill the rest of the colony underground one week later, according to North Carolina University entomologist S. Bambara. Baits are made of boric acid and a sweet material, or an insecticide such as spinosad or indoxacarb baits. A number of insecticides are used for the drench, such as deltamethrin, cyfluthrin, permethrin and bifenthrin applied to the surface of the mound and watered generously with at least 1 1/2 to 2 gallons of water per mound.

Components Of Melamine

The components of melamine are a motley crew.


Melamine has been the subject of compelling news stories in the past few years, principally due to its toxic properties when added to food products. Melamine is a nonorganic resin that industrial manufacturers use as an adhesive, a coating and a glue. Melamine is also a composite wood product that builders use in furniture and shelving. The chemical components of melamine read like Mr. Yuk's most wanted list.


Cyanuric Acid


Melamine in itself has a fairly low toxicity quotient. When melamine is accompanied by cyanuric acid, as is often the case, this can create a crystallization of elements that can lead to kidney stones and renal failure. Cyanuric acid is often present in melamine resins. Some infants in China who ingested formula that manufacturers doctored with melamine in an attempt to make it appear more nutritious experienced kidney stones and in some cases, kidney failure. Pets in the United States in 2007 who ate pet food that contained melamine and cyanuric acid experienced similar problems.


Formaldehyde


Do not breathe in formaldehyde fumes.


Formaldehyde is a key component of the process manufacturers use to obtain resins from melamine. They use these resins for industrial purposes in laminates and adhesives. When making composite wood products for building, such as melamine particleboard, manufacturers use urea formaldehyde as a binder. The state of California and the World Health Organization has classified formaldehyde as a known carcinogen, or cancer-causing agent. Formaldehyde can cause mucous membrane irritation and can trigger asthma attacks in people with asthma. The Environmental Protection Agency has identified formaldehyde as a hazardous air pollutant. Products treated with formaldehyde can release its toxicity to the user of the products.


Ammonium Thiocyanate


Ammonium thiocyanate, or NH4SCN, is translucent, crystalline inorganic compound that has many uses. A fabric dyeing agent, an aid in the electroplating process, a photographic stabilizer and a component in melamine manufacture, NH4SCN is normally a stable compound.When you inhale NH4SCN, it will irritate your throat and make you cough. If you are exposed to this chemical on a regular basis, it may cause dermatitis. If you ingest small amounts of NH4SCN repeatedly, it may cause bleeding, hives, or thyroid enlargement. If NH4SCN is overheated to a melting point, it emits toxic fumes containing cyanide, ammonia, nitric oxides, sulfur oxides and thiocyanates.


Triamine and Triazine


Do what it takes to keep these chemicals from groundwater.


Triamine and triazine are components of melamine. Triamine is the active ingredient in some commercial herbicides. Triamine is an amine containing three amido groups; amine is a derivative of ammonia. The herbicide industry also utilizes triazine as both an herbicide and a pesticide. When using either of these compounds, people should take precautions, such as wearing protective clothing and eye protection. You should also take care that run-off containing triamine or triazine does not reach sewage systems or leach into groundwater. Make sure that the area where you use these chemicals is adequately ventilated and keep them away from sources of combustion.

The opulence of Louis XIV's Versailles arrives in Louisiana.


In the 1500s, the Spanish came to the mouth of the Mississippi River and began to explore the territory. In the early 1700s, the French began to import slaves from Africa, adding yet another element to the Louisiana culture. Crystal chandeliers celebrated the ceilings, and large oil paintings in golden museum quality frames adorned the walls.

When the French relinquished their control of Louisiana to Spain, the Baroque era was at its height, and Charles III's court displayed its extravagance in architecture, art, music and furnishings. Becoming a world-class chef takes years of training.


Becoming a world-class chef with restaurants opening worldwide, top-rated television shows and best-selling cookbooks seems to be the allure of many people looking to get into the kitchen game. The reality is that many of today's top chefs have spent years, if not decades, sweating it out in the kitchen, taking the heat from the higher-ranked chefs above them. Paying your dues is a necessary part of this profession.


Instructions


1. Get a job in a kitchen. Before you drop thousands of dollars at a culinary academy, find a restaurant job to understand the basic dynamics of serving food to the public in a hot, fast-paced environment. "Wash dishes and work your way up to prep cook," says chef de cuisine Esteban Jiminez. "If you still have the desire, get on the saute line. If you're working that line and can't picture yourself doing anything else, that's when it lies true."


2. Study the masters. When you're not working, study the cookbooks and recipes of award-winning chefs such as Jacques Pepin, James Beard, Alice Waters, Gordon Ramsay and Thomas Keller. Learn what has distinguished these chefs in the art of cooking to understand what makes a world-class chef.


3. Refine your palette. A top chef creates masterful dishes by discerning what food combinations work best together. To do this, a good chef must understand the nuances of textures and flavors from an array of spices, meats, fish and produce. To start, concentrate on a cuisine you want to specialize in such as French, Indian or Asian and study the range of tastes that makes up these dishes until you can distinguish them easily.


4. Eat out. You don't have to dine in 5-star restaurants nightly, but be prepared to spend some time---and money--exploring what top chefs in your area are creating. Read restaurant reviews and get a sense of what new trends are emerging. Studying your competition may also inspire you to continue working on your own style and techniques.


5. Look for staging opportunities in progressively better kitchens. Cooks that take their profession seriously often work under well-known chefs or in award-winning restaurants for a year or more in an apprenticeship, and continue staging for many years before going off on their own. Getting in these doors requires perseverance and an unyielding work ethic, but it can pay off in the experience gained.


6. Open your own restaurant when you feel you have the requisite experience and sufficient signature style to stand out among the other chefs in your area. Offering your dishes for critical and public scrutiny is a necessary transition to becoming a known chef.

You may only think of a forest ranger when you think of careers in forestry, but forestry also includes naturalists, timber buyers, nursery managers and arborists. An agribusiness manager performs the management functions within the key organizations that buy, sell and produce food. These management positions can range from the more likely purchasing and financial managers to the more unlikely commodity traders. A communications career in the agricultural field looks similar to a traditional communications career but with a focus on agriculture. What Put In Cream Of Wheat

Cream of Wheat is often classes as a "love it or hate it" type of food, as people often have strong feelings for the cereal, whether good or bad. Some people have fond memories of being served this creamy, hot wheat cereal as a child, while others remember the same experience with dread. If you don't like the taste, give Cream of Wheat another chance by adding additional flavorful ingredients. With the right toppings, you may just find yourself a convert. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Sweeteners


Plain sugar is the most traditional sweetener for Cream of Wheat, working wonders to enhance the flavor. For a more caramelized flavor, use brown sugar instead. Honey is also a great option, often adding texture as well as flavor.. If you want to avoid the added calories found in sugar, you can always use an artificial sweetener, or a healthy sugar alternative such as agave nectar. Vanilla and almond extract, when used in moderation, can also add a lot of flavor to Cream of Wheat.


Fruit


Fruit adds a refreshing lightness to Cream of Wheat, which is naturally heavy on the stomach. Small berries are easiest to mix in, such as blueberries, raspberries, and sliced strawberries. Sliced bananas will easily melt into the hot Cream of Wheat with a little stirring. Harder fruits such apples should be chopped into small pieces and sprinkled on top of the cereal. You can also add dried fruits such as raisins, cranberries and apricots, which will become plump and juicy as they soak in the cereal.


Savory Ingredients


For a more savory alternative, add butter and salt to your Cream of Wheat. Experiment with fresh ground pepper, as well. Shredded cheese, crumbled bacon and green onions also make flavorful toppings.


Spices and Chocolate


Sprinkle Cream of Wheat with sweet spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice to kick up the flavor and richness of the cereal. These spices also work well when adding other sweet toppings such as sugar or vanilla extract. Cocoa powder turns Cream of Wheat into a chocolate breakfast treat. You can also use chocolate syrup or chocolate chips for a more intense chocolate flavor. You don't have to stick to basic milk or semi-sweet chocolate chips either. Feel free to mix in white or dark chocolate chips as well.


Nuts and Grains


Nuts add a crunchy texture to Cream of Wheat. Crush your favorite nuts and add them to the hot cereal. Common nuts to add include pecans, walnuts, almonds and Macadamia nuts. You can choose to use sweetened, plain or salted nuts depending on your preference. Another idea is to add chunks of granola pieces into the Cream of Wheat. Use loose granola chunks from a health food store, or simply break up a granola bar and stir it in.

Often, the most challenging part of any personal or family budget is the portion allotted for groceries. While other monthly expenses are set amounts or somewhat predictable, grocery expenses are dependent on shopping habits, food preferences and thoughtful planning. To create a grocery budget, set a realistic weekly or monthly shopping goal based on national averages and your spending history. Take time to create and maintain your grocery budget for the best results.


Instructions


1. Determine how much you want to spend on groceries weekly or monthly. Use the United States Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion food plan website as a guideline (see References). To see current budget suggestions, click on the most recent month available. Then, you will see an estimated weekly and monthly cost for family members based on their age. The values are divided into four categories, including: the thrifty plan, low-cost plan, moderate-cost plan and the liberal plan, which is nearly twice as much as the thrifty plan.


2. Review your checkbook register or bank statements for the past two or three months to determine exactly how much you have been spending on groceries each month. If you have been spending a liberal amount on groceries, avoid choosing a thrifty budget right away, because you may soon be discouraged at your inability to reduce your grocery budget suddenly and dramatically. Instead, try to spend a moderate amount for one month, and gradually reduce your spending as you get used to using a grocery budget.


3. Plan menus for at least a week in advance. Use weekly store ads to guide your weekly menu plans so that you can take advantage of sale prices.


4. Limit your trips to the grocery store. Extra trips to the grocery store will likely result in unnecessary purchases. Try to complete all your groceries during just one visit to the grocery store each week.


5. Shop with a list. To create a shopping list, refer to your menu. Also, check your kitchen to see what products you already have on hand. Refrain from buying items that are not on your list unless they are products you forgot to add to your list and that you genuinely need.


6. Shop alone and during slow business times, such as first thing in the morning. Shopping with other family members, especially children, will likely increase your spending. Also, shopping during busy store hours will increase the amount of time you are in the store, which may in turn increase your spending. Consider shopping for fruits and vegetables at local farmer's markets, and consider substituting beans instead of meat for one or more meals each week to reduce grocery costs.


7. Use coupons found in the Sunday newspaper and online to save money on products you normally buy. Choose products with lowest unit price as indicated on the item's price label on the grocery shelf. Also, purchase store brand or generic items when available.


8. Review your budget monthly to determine if you are meeting your spending goals. If you surpass your budgeted amount, tweak your menus and shopping lists to reduce costs. If you easily stay within your budgeted amount, consider reducing your grocery budget amount in an effort to further reduce spending.

When the warm weather comes out so do these little buggers. Ants can be one of the most frustrating pests. They are small and their numbers are large. Some bite and others just crawl all over you. This article is for the traditional, black, house ant. Here are a few possible solutions for this tiny problem. I have also included a few tips on keep them away. These are great homemade options for those who dislike using premixed pest control. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions


1. Boric Acid Solution - Combine a small amount of boric acid, sugar and hot water in a spray bottle and swirl mixing thoroughly. Boric Acid can be purchased at any discount retailer like Walmart under the name Borax. Make sure to keep this away from pets or children as it is hazardous. This is a good option for long term control.


2. Bleach Solution - Combine a small amount of bleach with hot water in a spray bottle and swirl mixing thoroughly. Make sure to keep this away from pets or children as it is hazardous. This is a good option for long term control. Using the name brands, like Clorox, does not add any additional killing power.


3. Ammonia - Spray Window cleaner liberally and watch them stop in their tracks, dead. This is a good option for short term control. It will have to be reapplied to be effective as the ants appear.


4. Oatmeal or Grits - Leave a few pieces of instant oatmeal or grits (some sort of water absorbing food) out where the ants are appearing. Get it as close to the nest as possible. The ant will take it back to the nest and eat it. Once eaten the food expands essentially popping the bug. Nice visual huh? Cruel but effective and non toxic. This option has to be applied frequently.


5. Now, if you don't want to kill the ants, but just want to keep them away from a particular area like a garden etc place a few drops of peppermint essential oil in a spray bottle and fill with water. Spray this generously around the area but try to avoid the plants themselves.

What Travel Trailers Use In The Winter

Having your home come along with you while you travel has its ups and downs. One worry that you may encounter is living in a trailer during the winter. But just about any trailer can be used in the winter. However, there are certain things to look for that some travel trailer manufacturers do better than others for winter travel.


Insulation


Just about all travel trailers can be outfitted for winter use. There are certain trailers that are made better for insulation than others. When investing into travel trailers for winter use, look into purchasing one made in the northern states or Canada. These will likely have better insulation than travel trailers made in the warmer, southern climates. Look for the travel trailer to have thick insulation in the ceilings, walls and floors. Having a travel trailer that has underbelly insulation is a plus because this will keep your floors warmer and will not let heat escape there.


Keep the Heat In


The key to living in a travel trailer during the winter is making sure the heat stays in and does not leak out. The outside of the travel trailer is important in the winter climates. Having a travel trailer with a fiberglass insulation, often referred to as an R7, will be better for insulation than an R9, which is block foam insulation.


Heated holding tanks will keep your fresh water supply from freezing. For the winter, you want any part of your travel trailer that will cause drafts or heat leakage to be blocked, so find a trailer that has thermal paned windows. Insulated, double-pane windows will stop a lot of the heat from getting out.


Blizzards and Snow


If you will be traveling and staying in an area that is known for blizzards and snow pileups, make sure you have plenty of food and water. Your well being and safety are the most important factors, so prepare for being cooped up in your trailer for a long time, without a chance to go to a store or supermarket.


Make your travel trailer insulated. Purchase skirting for going around the base of the trailer. You can make your own with plywood or buy one at a camping supply store. Check that you have enough propane if that is what you use for cooking and hot water. Wrap heat tape around the pipes to keep them from freezing, and, until you are ready to dump, keep the gray and black water valves closed. Have wide planks that you place under your tires so you do not sink into the ground when it thaws. Experiencing the winter in a travel trailer is something that you will remember for a long time, and, depending whether you were ready or not, will dictate if that experience was hair-raising or something you will want to do again and again.

The rental amounts will vary according to the size of the booth. While shopping for a booth, observe potential competitors within the flea market as well as the potential flow of foot traffic in the marketplace. Ask the management about how a flea market tenants can participate in promoting his business inside the flea market. See if the management office offers help with advertising for the collective businesses there.


4. Consider is the types of consumers the business will serve. Survey the typical flea market customer. Steam Baby Collard Greens

Instructions


1. Wash and drain baby collard greens in a colander to remove dirt, which if not removed, makes the consistency gritty. Cut the collard green leaves into ¼-inch to ½-inch long and wide slices.


2. Mince garlic and chop other vegetables, such as onions and peppers you want to steam with the baby collard greens, if desired.


3. Place your vegetable steamer basket into a large saucepan or wok. Pour water into the saucepan or wok so that it extends two inches up the side of the steamer without submerging your steamer.


4. Bring the water to a boil on high heat to create steam. Take the lid off the steamer and add your baby collard greens, garlic and vegetables.


5. Reduce the heat to medium. Replace the lid on top of the steamer and steam the ingredients for five minutes.


6. Remove the baby collard greens and vegetables. Toss them in lemon juice, olive oil, Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper for added flavor, if desired.

One possible cause of the sulfur smell in wine is the actual grapes that were used to produce the beverage. If the grapes were treated with a sulfur-based mildew or fungus spray close to the harvest, that could cause the wine to smell, according to "Techniques in Home Winemaking." This problem is more common in red wines because the juice of the grapes is usually in contact with the grape skins longer when red wine is being created; however, it can happen to white wines as well.

The yeast used can also create a sulfur smell if it is deprived of the nutrients it needs for the fermenting process. The proper nutrients might not be found in the grape juice if the grapes were harvested too soon or are over ripe.


Sulfer in Barrels


Oak barrels are most commonly used to allow wine to ferment, or age. The wood in the barrels can add flavor to the wine, but it can also cause the wine to have a sulfur smell. There can be sulfur deposits in the wood, which are normal, but if the wine remains in contact with those deposits for an extended period of time, it can give the wine a sulfur smell. Burning pieces of sulfur can also be used to clean oak barrels, and if that cleaning method is used and not properly removed from the barrel, the smell can also attach itself to the wine.


Removing the Smell


Once the smell of sulfur has attached itself to the wine, there are not many ways to remove it. The best chance you have of getting rid of the smell is by aerating the wine. To do this, pour the wine from one bottle or decanter to another for several minutes. Place the cork or top on the container after pouring between the two bottles. Allow the wine to sit for at least an hour. If the smell remains, attempt to pour the wine between two bottles again and allow it to sit, covered, for at least an hour. If this does not remove the smell, you can either drink the wine with the smell or throw away the wine.
